Massive thanks for this very informative, well written instruction! I am a guitar player doing symphonic metal. I got a Korg Krome first I like their joystick pitch modulator but returned it because I could not get customer support from the company concerning their drivers and DAW integration. So far everything about the Roland is a big improvement and thanks to this blog the Roland is working with Ableton.

Their description sure sounds cool: "This is exclusively for FA owners who would like to use Ableton Live in order to control their synth. You can browse through the tones, automate cutoff, etc.. When you save your project, it saves also the used Tones! In other words, when you load back the project into Live, it forces your FA to directly load the sounds you used! Just like a VST I haven't used any Max 4 Live gadgets, but that does look pretty cool.

I've got the keyboard working as a controller, but when I play the FA06 synth sounds into Logic I get the sounds I want accompanied by terrible howling feedback and other weird ambient noises. Any thoughts on what I've done wrong? Andrew - Thanks!

Chris - The symptoms you describe remind me of a few things. First, the FA probably "looks" the same to Logic as it does to Cubase and Live, which means you might have multiple MIDI input ports appearing in Logic, where you will have to make sure Logic is only using one of them as an input device.

Anything plugged into the inputs is automatically mixed with the keyboard's audio out, so a mic or something can result in feedback if your speakers are on. Next, depending on how you're connecting the FA, you might want to make sure that you're not using both track monitoring in your DAW and direct monitoring at the same time- you should only use one or the other. Again, not a Logic user, and I don't know what you're using for an interface, so don't know how you'd check this.

If not, you can sometimes be surprised by sounds the FA is making, because in normal mode it will play to its own outputs in addition to whatever you're triggering in the DAW. This all makes perfect sense and I reckon will fix it once I get home and follow your advice. Huge thanks for responding so promptly and in such helpful detail. I'll let you know how I get on. Enjoying the blog - you're doing us all a great service, keep it up!

Thanks - Chris. I read few times this great post and finally buy Roland FA 06 All midi signals from outboard sound modules is routed to my Motu midi interface, and all audio signals is routed to my Focusrite audio interface and its all is works very fine in Cubase 5 using Focusrite asio driver.

For example if i want to record from my sound module number 1, I just make midi track in Cubase select as output Motu midi express port to which this module is plugged and easy record Midi notes - than if I need audio from this module Nr 1 I just simply add audio track and on input I assign the inputs from my Focusrite audio interface where sound module is plugged Also I can controll all my vst plugins from my midi keyboard.

Then I try use ROLAND FA as my main keyboard for everything because it have DAW control and it need to do all the same work which my previous midi control keyboard does , plus it have beautiful sound banks, sampler, sequencer So as you see there is some kind of conlict in Roland FA driver and Focusrite driver. Can you please help me how to resolve this problem?????

Best regards Imants. Wow dude, you rocked! This post has more comprehensive enlightenment that the roland fa's manual.

Finally i found someone who shared the concepts of roland's fa output routing. Sincerely, i was weeks focused to find some answers that only this post helped me. The fa's manual has a huge lack of audio interface explanation and its uses. Thanks so much for writing this review.

I love this workstation!!! It's so beautifully set up for pure performance in any mode. Great review!!! I was thinking of going with the Yamaha also, but I liked this better. I think it has much better key action all around! Plays soooooo beautiful!!!!!! Kiko - Yeah, it took me weeks to figure this thing out, but now that I understand it, I love it. Alexia - Thanks!

Yes, it's a really good board. I'm sure the Yamaha is good too, but I really love the sound selection and expandability on the Rolands. Thanks for the article. Very useful! Although I can enter the notes from the keyboard into S1, I couldn't find a way yet to hear back from the FA using it as output.

Are you familiar with Studio One? Great post. Pades do not transmit midi and a big one for me is the lack of utilizing splits with a external keyboard.

The KBD switch only works locally. I am a Roland fanboy but I have starting looking for a new master keyboard for my Cubase studio because I am getting tired of working around the simplest task with Roland's boards. This is such a useful post, thank you for taking the time to post this detailed information.

I have an FA08 and use Reaper , would like to maximise integration and the complexity and number of settings can be overwhelming. I've been using a setup like this for a couple of years with the FA However, my playing ability has grown well beyond the keybed let's just say at first, I didn't realize how bad it is. I moved it off to the side, and will replace with a Komplete Kontrol s61 Mk2, likely, until I can scare up enough for a new Fantom 7.

Post a Comment. In this post I talk about why I picked the FA over other keyboard options, what accommodations I had to make in order to fit it into my rig, and how the keyboard integrates with Steinberg Cubase and Ableton Live.

Robot or human?

They are made for people who do their own recording and will use these to monitor the mixing etc. They have 2 analogue line inputs and 2 digital inputs optical and coaxial which then use the onboard DAC converter to output analogue sound. However, I acquired them almost new a few years ago to listen to music with a minimum of wires and boxes and for this are really amazing! I won't describe what they do from a studio professional point of view as I'm not qualified to do this - if you're involved with studios you'll already know what they do. Here's what they can do from a domestic home stereo aspect:Firstly, they are powered speakers so there's no need for an amplifierYou can plug in up to 2 analogue 'line' sources; one RCA and one mini jack. You can plug a record turntable but it MUST have its own phono preamp.

Great price on this well reviewed unit. Perfect for most people unless you need wall shaking bass or surround sound. I'd be more inclined to get the B and add a separate powered subwoofer if you're after a better sounding system. Anybody here have any idea how this works stack up against a pair of bookshelf speakers?
