Ten Landmark Speakers Worth Collecting

David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills.

Please help, if you can. Discussion in ' General Audio Discussion ' started by djnagle , Jan 7, Log in or Sign up.

Brief history of electrostatic speakers Discussion in ' General Audio Discussion ' started by djnagle , Jan 7, Messages: 13, Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico. I stumbled upon this history of electrostatic speakers. Messages: 12, What a great share! I've got the Quad and preamp to mate with those ESL's, however passed them up years ago! Been kicking my back sides ever since. These speakers are so detailed, and when backed with a decent sub Quadman2 , Jan 7, KevinJS likes this.

Messages: 12, Location: San Jose Ca. I had a pair of RTR electrostatics. Also had to have some electro- s headphones.

They sounded great when hooked up properly. I eventually used the final output of the tube of the amp for best configuration. Of course this was high voltage VV but it worked. Only problem was the fine diaphragm would burn up if cranked up too high. I must have gone through a dozen until I got it right.

Those days it was only mono. Messages: Location: WV. Thanks djangle, very interesting, had no idea that electrostats went that far back!! Messages: 3, Location: Kitchener, ON. Not that surprising though since most of the characteristics of electricity were discovered back then. The basic circuit for amplification is still used. Love my Acoustat Monitor 3s. Superampman , Jan 7, Messages: 17, KevinJS , Jan 7, Y Totally. Just had a visual of a pair of ESL63s being used as a weapon.

Perhaps best to leave that one alone then. Messages: 14, Location: In the woods I own history as I have a bunch of those Janszens and a pair of the Quad Ironically my ML don't work correctly.

Quadman2 , Jan 8, Messages: 11, It's a shame most of those "short histories" end in the 60s since there have been a number of refinements since then.

What originally seduced me was the Dayton-Wright XG8 electrostat. I first heard Dr. With its SF6 gas enclosed space, it ran a very voltage bias and could handle lots of power unlike other contemporary designs. Nelson Pass used to demo his Threshold amps driving stacked Dayton-Wrights in the 80s. A bit later, Jim Strickland of Acoustat pioneered the use of dual step up transformers, each optimized for a frequency range which resulted in a far more linear impedance curve. Acoustats were quite successful over a long period of time and created a number of models.

In the late 90s, Dr. Roger West arrived at a different approach to addressing the inherent beaming, by placing the diaphragm across a cross sectioned grid arrayed in facets of varying height to address inherent diaphragm resonance which provided controlled directivity across a far wider patch.

That approach lended itself to using larger panel configurations and even large arrays without sacrificing coherency. He also used a dual transformer approach using toroidals for improved linearity.

While Martin-Logan abandoned the full range concept and now only makes hybrids, Soundlab produces full range designs capable of virtually flat response down to 30 hz. Ray Kimber used to demo his multi-channel Iso-array recordings at RMAF using massive arrays of Prostat s - each nine feet tall with a 22 degree radiation angle.

He used three per channel in front and doubles in the rear. If you'd like to see them, Google "Ray Kimber Soundlab"! E-Stat , Jan 8, You must log in or sign up to reply here.

In the late 's, any loudspeaker was considered exotic. Today, most of us take the wonders of sound reproduction for granted. It was before Thomas Edison had invented the first phonograph. This was a horn-loaded diaphragm that was excited by a playback stylus. In , Sir Oliver Lodge invented a cone loudspeaker, which he referred to as a "bellowing telephone", that was very similar to the conventional cone loudspeaker drivers that we know today. However, Lodge had no intention for his device to reproduce music because in there was no way to amplify an electrical signal! As a result, his speaker had nothing to offer over the acoustical gramophones of the period. It was not until that Dr.

A very cool look at high-end audio design for audiophiles and design aesthetes alike. Say what you want about Steve Jobs; he knew good product design when he saw it.

Who designed Acoustat's full range electrostatic speakers?

Speaker collecting is like car collecting. You can use only one pair of speakers or one car at a time. But, you can enjoy looking at them, fixing them, thinking about them — that is what collecting is all about. Here is my list of ten collectible speakers and which characteristic of sound reproduction each embodies. They are all over 30 years old and still sound better than most speakers sold today! This was a voice speaker developed for the Bell Telephone system to provide intelligible, natural-sounding voices in offices, phone booths and railway platforms.

What is the best speaker you have ever owned ?????

Speakers are, of course, the most difficult of all components to evaluate, even in the best of circumstances. In my case, I also have the added burden that two of my main contributors are or were speaker manufacturers, some of whose products you will see as References below. Other associates are distributors of speaker lines. Accordingly, I made the only decision I could:. All the choices in this category are mine alone. What I say to those who question my objectivity is; please closely read the rest of the References first to see my consistency and sensitivities, before making judgments on the few choices you may be understandingly skeptical about. Any final and true judgment concerning these or any specific components requires a personal listening session with them.

With hindsight we see that concurrent with the arrival of such massive amplifiers were new speaker brands, including Magneplanar, Dayton-Wright, Acoustat.

One speaker does not pass a signal, but is known to have been functional less than a year ago. We have not attempted to diagnose or repair. Other Notes: The Acoustat Spectra "has a wide, pleasant dispersion at all frequencies. Each speaker of the mirror image pair contains a narrow line source sector operating at all frequencies bass, midrange, high. Adjacent sectors handle mid-range and low frequencies.
