Scottish gaelic speakers census tract

The written word has always helped to shape cultures and societies but for centuries most people could not read. Many collections in the National Library of Scotland shed light on the rise of literacy in Scotland from the earliest manuscripts to the foundation of compulsory education. In the Middle Ages, literacy was mostly limited to the wealthy and powerful in schools run by monasteries in larger towns and cities. The Church produced and commissioned many manuscripts — the only form of the book before the invention of printing. As manuscripts were written and illuminated by hand they were expensive and not widely accessible. By the 15th century, grammar schools and universities began to spread literacy beyond the clergy, and surviving manuscripts by laymen show literacy in other professions.

Disadvantaged communities refers to the areas throughout California which most suffer from a combination of economic, health, and environmental burdens. These burdens include poverty, high unemployment, air and water pollution, presence of hazardous wastes as well as high incidence of asthma and heart disease. One way that the state identifies these areas is by collecting and analyzing information from communities all over the state. CalEnviroScreen , an analytical tool created by the California Environmental Protection Agency CalEPA , combines different types of census tract-specific information into a score to determine which communities are the most burdened or "disadvantaged. As a living language in daily use Gaelic may be said to be extinct east of the Castleton. Sir Sam. Forbes in his Description of Aberdeen about states that the natives of Braemar speak two languages. If this implies that bi-lingualism was the rule even at that date, it is an over-statement, for forty years later at the trial of a Braemar man in Edinburgh we find a large number of the local witnesses, more especially the common people, giving their evidence through an interpreter. But probably he means no more than that enough English was known by the bigger tenants to enable them to conduct their business in the low country.
