Doherty amplifier thesis

The pursuit of a linear operation able to fulfill the standard specifications usually implies the design of a PA topology that achieves a non-optimal power efficiency. In the last decades a lot of focus has been put on transmitter topologies that could brake this paradigm, leading to a number of different implementations of efficient PA topologies like the Doherty amplifier, the Envelope Elimination and Restoration EER topology or polar transmitter and the Envelope Tracking ET transmitter. In order to meet the linearity requirement specified by the telecommunication standard, these new highly efficient architectures are usually implemented with a concurrent linearization technique being deployed, often in the form of digital predistortion DPD. Within this framework of requested simultaneous linearity and efficiency, this thesis proposes some original contributions for linearity and efficiency enhancement of RF PAs.

Abstract In this thesis, several broadband, high efficient Doherty Power Amplifiers DPA for wireless communication system were investigated. For different application scenarios, such as 3G, 4G and upcoming 5G wireless communication systems, the Doherty power amplifier have their own required performance due to advances in communication protocols.

There are three major parts to this thesis. In the first part, second harmonic short-circuit network SHSNs with mutual coupling is proposed, which gives higher efficiency without sacrificing bandwidth. In the second part, a mixed topology Doherty power amplifier was proposed. With the aid of specific gate bias configuration of two active devices, the high efficiency at back-off can be achieved.

Meanwhile, a harmonic injection network allows the second harmonic components can be mutually injected into the drain of other device. This improves the disadvantage caused by the specific gate bias.

Hence, the broadband high efficiency Doherty power amplifier can be achieved. In the third and last part, an asymmetric drain biased post-matching DPA using harmonic injection is proposed that gives further back-off extension. The injected harmonic components are generated by the two active devices. Aided by the proposed harmonic injection network, drain waveform amplitude modulation for both devices can be achieved at saturation, which results in enhanced saturated power for both carrier and peaking devices, while carrier back-off power remains unchanged.

As a consequence, the back-off region is extended. Moreover, the power utilization factor of the asymmetric drain biased Doherty power amplifier is also improved. Measured results of the proposed Doherty power amplifier demonstrated that operation at 10dB back-off is possible between 1.

The experimental design and characterisation of Doherty power amplifiers

At the beginning, based on the behavior models of circuit blocks, the FMCW radar transceiver is analyzed and simulated on system level. After a brief review of the 65 nm standard CMOS technology, characterization and modeling of transistors and Power amplifier units are the most important components in mobile radio base stations RBSs. Their performance affects the overall performance of the base station in terms of output power and efficiency. A special high interest is the combination of high efficiency and wide bandwidth. This dissertation is dedicated to this central problem. In this contribution, a design methodology for octave-bandwidth power amplifiers PA for 5G communication systems using surface mount dual-flat-no-lead packaged gallium-nitride high-electron-mobility transistor devices is presented. In this paper, design, implementation, and experimental results of efficient, high-power, and multi-octave gallium nitride-high electron mobility transistor power amplifier are presented. The used transformer has a fla Within this contribution the design, implementation, and experimental results of a satellite communication SatCom power amplifier PA , block upconverter BUC as well as an evaluation within the satellite link are described.

Nuttrapong Futrakul , Florida International University. The primary purpose of this research was to study the power gain and efficiency of microwave power amplifier for personal communication devices by using simulation software. In the power amplifier circuit designs, the power gain and efficiency of power amplifier are significant factors. The Doherty configuration and matching components for both input and output of the system are the main techniques use for the thesis research. The Doherty configuration uses two transistors to optimize the total output gain. The matching technique provides the maximum gain at the target frequency. The individual stability consideration for transistors was calculated by MatLab script in order to meet the requirement for microwave circuit design. The simulation software, PUFF, was used as the simulation tool.

This thesis aims at addressing the inherent linearity of high efficiency power amplifiers, so that of an X dB back-off Doherty Power Amplifier.

Vacancy details

Modern day digital modulation techniques in communication systems produce large peak-to-average ratios. To maintain linearity, power amplifiers have to operate at backed-off levels. This results in low efficiency with consequences such as high power consumption, short battery life and excessive heat in power amplifiers. This thesis presents a design procedure for a Classical Doherty amplifier.
