I hate buying receivers. And speakers. In about two hours, I intend to order these things that I shall link below, but it strikes me that I might want to run this by the combined brilliance of the hivemind to determine if I was making a terrible, terrible mistake. Receiver: Yamaha RX-V Speakers: Polk Audio RM Alternative recommendations that I simply must try? Cautionary tales to dissuade me from these purchases? Never had a problem and it can handle everything I can throw at it.
HDMI is dead technology. Receiver should be fine, but I disrecommend those speakers, as I disrecommend all cheap-and-chintzy 5. If you absolutely must have surround sound, buy those PSB speakers and then buy some cheap junky speakers for surrounds.
The cheap junky speakers will be just as good as the 5. And what specs they do have are kind of awful. A lot more stuff is going to sound a lot better through them for that reason alone.
And in the frequencies they both do cover, I pretty much guarantee the PSB ones will sound much better. Not just a few months ago there was a great deal for a Receiver and great speakers for a little less then you are looking at now.
I turned Union Carbide onto the deal and he was very happy with the set up. This was the deal that expired a few months ago but I think there is something similar to that still around.
I have a Polk 5. If what you really care about is music, then yeah, just get a good pair now. The receiver looks good on paper. Does it support 3D video? I assume that it also immediately replaces your personality with that of a rabid luchador if you stay in the room to listen to it.
The rear channels are much, much less important than the front channels. So you really want to put most of your budget in the front speakers and much less on the rears.
On a tight budget, forget a center channel. You really do want all your front speakers to be good, and being able to do that in two speakers instead of three lets you spend more on your front speakers for the same amount of money.
On a tight budget, forget subwoofers. A good subwoofer is expensive, and a bad subwoofer is worse than no subwoofer at all. So I guess the Polk guys agree with you. Turn down all the other sounds to acceptable levels, and dialog will be difficult to hear. This is much less true if your 5.
In fact, most audio engines just place the sound in 3D space, whatever it is, and let the audio middleware or API handle which speakers its going to come out of. I think games is a whole other story. But at some point, I suppose you need to look at your budget and your usage patterns. I got so wrapped up in thinking about the speakers themselves I forgot he was getting the Yamaha receiver.
