4 ohms into 8 ohms amplifier
I still confused abut impedance high is 8 ohms and is low is 4 ohm? Thank you, I have seen some speakers or more watts into 6 or 4 ohms but compatible with 8 ohms martin login is 1 of few others variable impedance on speakers how hack i does this work?? Dan here is how it works. This generates a curve like you see below in this speaker. Here is the rub, amplifiers are NOT tested into dynamic loads, but an 8-ohm RESISTOR, and all amps vary their performance into reactive loads so this is why amplifiers can sound so different from one another.

How Much Amplifier Power Do I Need?
All passive speakers relying on outboard amplification have an impedance rating, given in ohms, provided by the manufacturer. This number helps you match the speakers to amplifiers. Amplifiers have ratings in watts when driving a load with a specified impedance, also conveniently listed in ohms.
Is it better to get a speaker with bigger ohm rating like watts into 8 ohms instead of watts into 4 ohms? Maybe — maybe not. If you own an amplifier that lists only a power rating into 8 ohms — and YES, the 8 ohms for the speakers is very important — you might damage the amplifier with lower impedance speakers. Often a manufacturer who only lists a power rating into 8 ohms will also print a warning about using lower impedance speakers.
However, it is not important if you have or are considering an amplifier with a higher power rating into 4 ohms than into 8 ohms typical of better amplifiers. The 4 ohm speakers can play louder before this amplifier clips if the speakers have the same efficiency as an 8 ohm speaker. In an electrical circuit with current that just flows in one direction Direct Current or DC , the impedance is merely the resistance of the circuit and is calculated by the dividing the voltage at the source by the current in the circuit.
Old fashioned flashlights are good examples of DC circuits. An electrical circuit that alternates its flow of current is called Alternating Current AC. Music is the mechanical equivalent of Alternating Current with air flow as the current. Therefore, speakers only use AC. Explosions like cannons are the rare example of nearly DC sound. That is why speakers have a hard time accurately reproducing them.
In speakers, extra components capacitors and inductors used in most designs can have a dramatic effect on the flow depending on the frequency of the alternations. A capacitor can only accept a certain amount of electricity until it stops the current unless you then increase the voltage at the source. If the capacitor has a small value, it will only allow very high frequencies through without reduction.
So, capacitors in speakers act like filters. Inductors work the other way: small inductors only block the very high frequencies and everything else is passed without interference. A very big inductor only allows the very low frequencies to pass. The impedance is changed by extra effects that the capacitors and inductors have, including their internal resistance and the leading or lagging of current and voltage in the devices. This makes things even more confusing and the variation from the lowest impedance point to the highest impedance point over the operating frequency range is often ten times or more.
This is not EE , so we will leave those refinements to another blog. The impedance specified by the speaker manufacturer is often near the lowest point, since amplifiers in general are happier with higher impedances.
I do remember a review of an expensive, major brand speaker when the reviewer added the comment that he felt 1. Over the years , Ohm has made 4, 6 and 8 ohm speakers. In general, you need thicker wire to minimize these effects with speakers having wide variations in their impedance curve.
Impedance is more a matter of matching speakers to amplifiers - not choosing a better or a worse impedance. In general, today, most speakers can handle a range of amplifier power. Likewise, most modern amplifiers can accommodate a variety of speakers and their varying nominal impedances. So, pay attention and ask questions when you match speakers and amp.

True that a 4 Ohm amp can power 8 ohm speakers at half wattage?
Most guitarists would probably not consider themselves experts when it comes to the subject of natural sciences. Although you may have a vague idea of the different scientific phenomena that hide behind every note you play, your main focus as a player — quite naturally — is usually on the music itself, and the instrument. Boring science is just something that would get in the way. And yet, consider this: the everyday electric guitar player probably namechecks a bunch of famous physicists regularly, even though they might not be overly au fait with the scientific laws associated with these long-dead genii in white coats. Hertz, Ohm, Volt, Ampere — these are all familiar names that belong in the basic vocabulary of any slightly technically-minded guitarist. These things duly considered, it can be highly insightful for you to get to know the stories — and the theories — behind those names in a bit more detail.

Applied Innotech. There are many different things for you to get your head around, including the words and terminologies that are used with speakers. So, we know that voltage is measure in volts, and the electrical current in measured in amps. And how do we measure electrical resistance? Whilst it does make up part of the equation, with speakers we used an impedance rating, not just a resistance rating. Impedance in speakers is the resistance of the current, but it also takes into account the reactance of a circuit as well. The reactance of the speaker is made up of different factors. This includes the capacitance of the circuit, which as it sounds, is the circuits ability to store electrical charge.
I don't understand "double the power into 4 ohms"

The ohm is a measurement of the electric resistance between two points. In a speaker, the ohm is a bad thing. The lower the ohms the less energy it takes to drive the speaker. The less energy, the more you get out of your amps. An 8 ohm speaker requires more amperage to run than a 4 ohm speaker.

NAD and McIntosh are engineered differently, so conventional expectations do not apply. This may be a good thing or a bad thing. So to summarize: you want integrated, ideally compact and user friendly, well engineered, sounds good, and able to drive speakers rated at 4 ohms dropping to 3 at points. LOG IN. I'm in the market for an integrated amp and trying to sort through tech specs. My understanding of the tech aspects of hi-fi gear is limited.

We use cookies to enhance your experience. An amplifier that can produce watt into an 8-ohm load is required for a speaker with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. The amplifier should be watt per channel for a stereo pair of speakers. HomeX virtual experts will assess your issue for free! Sorry, the web browser you're using is not supported by this website.
Features and General Questions for Electrostatic Speakers
Solid-state Amps: Most solid-state amplifiers would rather look at an open circuit no speaker at all than a load. Therefore, you can usually use a load that is higher than the recommended load. Do not use a lower impedance load, as this could cause serious damage to your SS amp.

Well, when it comes to matching that amplifier with your speakers, the answer is; quite a bit, actually. Though we spend countless hours scouring local HiFi suppliers and reading reviews to find the perfect speakers, often, our choice of amplifier is something of an afterthought. This remains true despite the fact that amplifiers are almost as crucial to the tone and overall presentation of your audio as your speakers are. Yes, though that innocuous metal box might look similar to other amplifiers in the showroom, it will produce a unique sound profile and, through its technical specifications, support some — but not all — of the speakers available to you. As such, this guide is going to be something of an essentials piece, giving you all the information you need without the complicated maths or advanced terminology like slew rate, dampening or electromotive force, so you can get back to what matters — your music. So, for your devoted audiophiles, let that serve as a warning!

I'm playing folk music in a coffee shop. How much amplifier power do I need? Our rock group will be playing in a seat concert hall. How many watts will we need? I just bought some PA speakers. I want to play them as loud as they can get without blowing them up.
Wiring Subwoofers & Speakers To Change Ohm’s
Speaker impedance changes amplifier power output. In fact, your amplifier power could be nearly half or double its capacity — depending on the impedance of your speakers. But how much should this concern you?
