The Community Issues Conference is an event organized annually by the tenth grade, in which they are given the opportunity to select social justice issues that they hold close, or deem important to address. This crucial aspect of the conference generates an enthusiastic attitude towards learning more about the issues, and towards sharing them with fellow peers. The conference is an essential part of the Brooklyn Friends journey as it provides a new perspective on service through building partnerships in the community and engaging in awareness-raising and advocacy. This year, the Class of offered eighteen sessions, connecting with twenty-seven New York City organizations.
Keynote Speaker
Sparse Modeling in Image Processing and Deep Learning Sparse approximation is a well-established theory, with a profound impact on the fields of signal and image processing. In this talk we start by presenting this model and its features, and then turn to describe two special cases of it — the convolutional sparse coding CSC and its multi-layered version ML-CSC. Amazingly, as we will carefully show, ML-CSC provides a solid theoretical foundation to … deep-learning. Alongside this main message of bringing a theoretical backbone to deep-learning, another central message that will accompany us throughout the talk: Generative models for describing data sources enable a systematic way to design algorithms, while also providing a complete mechanism for a theoretical analysis of these algorithms' performance. This talk is meant for newcomers to this field - no prior knowledge on sparse approximation is assumed. Michael Elad holds a B. Over the last decade, he has used ecological momentary assessments delivered using mobile apps to better the interactions between hearing amplification techniques and the real-world environments in which they are used. She obtained her MSc degree in computer science and aerospace engineering from the Free University of Berlin, Germany, in and her PhD degree in self-organising sensor networks from the University of Lugano, Switzerland, in Toggle navigation.
The result is a rich synthesis of plenary talks by internationally acclaimed researchers, technical papers in both classic and new emerging topics, tutorials and special sessions on frontier signal-processing topics and related areas, and a 3-minute theses competition.
