Sea of Thieves has been a Windows Store exclusive since its launch in early , but that's about to change: the game is coming to Steam. Rare made the announcement today, and while there's no release date as yet, there's already a store page. Better still, there won't be any problem playing with people who have purchased the game on the Windows Store, as full cross-play between Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam is supported. The game got its most recent update last month in the form of Hearts of Fire, but the most important feature in the game, at least for me, is that pets can throw up. It's the small details that make modern games great. Anchor up, sails down and full Steam ahead! While we don't have a date to share just yet, we're thrilled to announce that Sea of Thieves is coming to Steam soon!

Rare's confirmed that no, current Sea of Thieves players will not be getting a free copy of the game on Steam. Rare decided to cover it in a recently released FAQ detailing how the Steam release connects to the other versions of Sea of Thieves.

However, you'll need to download the entire game again. In a live stream, Sea of Thieves developer Rare announced that the game's file size will be reduced thanks to a change to its game's file structure. This update to Sea of Thieves will go live on February 6. This follows comments from Rare that would see more story-based content to be added to the game, and we won't be surprised if this change in file structure is linked to this. In conversation with Game Reactor, Sea of Thieves Executive Producer Joe Neate let on that the game will get a proper story and quest system designed to fulfil the needs of what he describes as "underserving players".
