I record here at home in a small room 12 X It gets extra-small when I attempt to drive a watt Blues Jr. Given that the room is small and my ears are old 48 years , I'm forced to use an attenuator. Even the 5-watt amps I've tried out are too loud for the space. I'm looking for a 1-watt solution with, ideally, a Blackface sound. Emery's Microbaby is a strong contender. Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks for any thoughts, Jim. Maybe zvex nano amp? Worth considering is using a Sansamp box as a preamp, and a clean solid state power amp which could be a hifi amp to drive some quality guitar cabs.

I have some nice tube amps, e. Orange Rocker 30, and I have to say that my collection of Sansamp pedals through a solid state power amp can deliver some very convincing tube-amp tones that compare very favourably, and are certainly more versatile. I understand why you would want a 1W tube amp: many tube amps are hellishly loud - even a THD Univalve on the 6W setting is too bloody loud in a small studio, and tone-sucking dummy loads are not the answer.

However - the cost of having a low wattage tube amp is that you can't get decent clean sounds. What I believe you really need is 'control' over output level, so you can get the tones you want, at reasonable volume.

Sure - to a purist there may be a little compromise; no power amp sag, no speaker creaming, no eardrum distortion, blah, blah, woof, woof.

Bollocks, largely. One thing I love about my Rocker 30 is that it can give me cleans and crunch at reasonable, controllable volume. Much lower volume than many lower-wattage-but-effectively-uncontrollable amps. You may also like the Tiny Terror but I chose the tone of the Rocker.

Trust me - wattage isn't the best way to compare loudness. With a preamp whether Sansamp or a real tube front end and a good power amp, you actually can have full control over loudness. A W solid state amp can be far more controllable than a 6W tube amp.

And I find myself often preferring the headroom and lower noisefloor available. To my way of thinking, there is definately tone advantages to be had by multiple stages of distortion. This - imo - is why the theories about the necessity of power amp saturation and speaker saturation have arisen. However - I believe it is possible to get multiple stages of distortion that achieve essentially the same sound but at 'preamp' levels.

Which means you don't really have to abuse the power amp stage to get great tones. And frankly - when speakers are driven too loud, the cabinets rattle and I think tone suffers. I tend to think that if you can get a great clean tone, you can always make it as dirty as you want at the front end. Just my 2c - because I explored low watt amps some years back and decided it wasn't the way to go. Ron Vogel. I hear you I am in the same boat with low watt amps, headroom is a real problem.

I personally think an old champ is really the way to go, with a good distortion pedal. It's built to high standard, all hand wired with a tube preamp and tube poweramp with a tiny transformer followed by a 7 watt SS amp designed to amplify the whole thing cleanly.

It comes in a little cabinet with a 6 inch speaker, but it will drive a large cab, it has outs that will kill the internal speaker or allow it to run in tandem with outboard speakers, there's a british style hi-gain swith and a tone control. It records really, really well and Tris is a great guy to deal with. His amps are well priced, no where near bucks, more like under for the quarter watt.

I built a Champ-style head a while ago and through my cab its very loud, but through my cab its very reasonable. Just something to consider Jim, There is nothing wrong with a good attenuator, and at marginal settings won't hurt your tone much at all.

I have a couple THD Hotplates and as long as I don't go below db, or preferably -8 the amp still sounds great. FYI taking -8db off a 15 watt Fender puts you at about watts. Some attenuators can even go lower with respectable tone. Part of the reason attenuators get a bad rap is the illusion volume makes in the tone. When something is really loud it appears to have more lows and highs and a bigger sound, and when cut back the ears hear it as thinner and smaller. Folks tend to think it's all the attenuators fault.

That said, when you mic and amp in the studio you are going for the playback perspective in tone and the volume the amp had at "in the room" no longer applies. What kind of attenuator have you tried with your Fender? Dean Roddey.

The Emery Microbaby. I have one and it is from 1 to 2 watts, depending on what tube configuration you use. What are you all crazy? Just get a POD! I feel the need to clarify that I'm JOKING right here, before I even post this, lest I be burned at the stake edit: In real life, I've been very happy with my cheap little fender champ mic'd up, and my mesa recording preamp when I need low volume and or headphones friendly solutions - which luckily isn't very often!

I bought a new Fender Champ. I replaced the speaker and tubes and it sounds great at low volumes. Yuri Kogan. Red Iron make a beutiful 1 watt amp. But it only has a gain control.

Great sound all valve Big Block blue is a great little amp that also doubles as a valve pedal it has a separate volume and output for that This little thing has only 2 valves but can drive a cab with 2xVintage 30's very nicely. I have over amps boutiques and Vintage and its a great part of the collection Yury. As much as I love tube amps, if your volume restrictions are that severe, I would just go for an Axe Fx. Curt Emery builds good quality hand wired amp, no doubt. To help control volume, you can also choose a low efficiency driver in the 96 dB range.

I would look at the Weber 12AA series with the 11 Oz magnets. I think it'd help to clarify what you're looking for.

If you want to crank and amp and get the sound of hot tubes, then you're looking for a sub-1w solution because a cranked Superbaby is still pretty loud. There are other good solutions. First off, for clean tone, the Fender probably works well for you as it sits, so no need to reproduce that. Not too expensive but hard to find. Alesis built the stereo studio amp that works pretty well along that line, does clean too A small amp, attenuated a little works well. Modelling's worked for some people, the Axe Fx is really good sounding and feeling.

There's solutions, depending on how much time and money you want to put into it In response to the earlier poster about lack of a clean tone in low wattage amps, you've probably never tried an emery micro baby.

Depending on the tube combo, you can get lots. A 12at7 preamp tube, as mine currently has, will give you a very nice clean sound. It's a tube clean sound but sounds as clean as my larger fender tube amps, just not as loud.

And speaking of loud, a micro baby is still a loud amp for home use. It's not the quiet little amp you think it might be. My Studio. Tom Scholz Power Soak. It's switchable between 4. That way you can get some fantastic full cleans with the amp opened up or scream to your heart's content in the wee hours.

Reeves Amplification Custom 6 and Custom You can get Fender like cleans and Marshall JCM like distortion, its a very small amp, but its extremely verstatile. Fender Tweed & The 5E3 Deluxe

I got this for my daughter for a nice portable practice amp. Dirt is terrible at best. The amp could use a little better speaker, but for a single watt amp, it 's fun to play. I'm curious to see how it sounds blowing a harp through it. Just received the Fender and I'm impressed by it's styling, effects and and power although I haven't tried it outside of my bedroom yet. I also am not able to judge the battery life, etc as I haven't had it long enough to give an opinion on them.
