How to wire two 16 ohm speakers to 8 ohm

The answer is, as many as you want, theoretically speaking. Just to be clear, when we refer to an 8 ohm amp, we are talking about a typical stereo amplifier with two outputs. An 8 ohm amplifier is called such because typically it performs very well with an eight ohm load attached to it. When dealing with most commercial ceiling speakers, you will find that the majority have an 8 ohm rating for audio program material AC.

Connect four speakers to your Amp or Connect:Amp

Below are the available wiring diagrams for the speaker configuration you selected. The resulting impedance ohm load is considered the "Nominal Impedance".

The most basic cabinet configuration is a single speaker. Two Speakers. Parallel - When wiring in parallel, the resistance of the speakers decreases. Two 8 Ohm speakers wired hooked up in Parallel results in a 4.

The simplest way to get a total output of 8 ohms, is to wire the two 8 ohm speakers in parallel for 4 ohms and then wire that in series with a small resistor a. Examples: Two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel will have a net impedance of 8 divided by 2 4 ohms.

If you have three speakers. If the speakers are less than 8 ohms, then to be safe, you should wire them in series. Connect 2 Speakers in Parallel. To calculate the total load impedance of. For relatively short runs less than 50 feet to 8 ohm speakers, 16 gauge wire will usually do just fine.

It's cost-effective and easy to work with. It is impossible - your only options are to wire 2 8 ohm speakers in parallel and get a 4 ohm load, or 2 8 ohm speakers in series and get a 16 ohm load. Below are a couple of examples. Two 8 ohm speakers wired in hooked-up Parallel results in a 4 ohm load. Two 8 ohm speakers in parallel will give a 4 ohm load, which is ideal for Loksound and Zimo decoders.

Not suitable for the Loksound. If all speakers 8 ohm speaker wiring the same impedance, the total impedance is the impedance of a single speaker divided by the total number of speakers.

Parts Express sells non-inductive resistors for this purpose. When using more than one speaker with your amp the equivalent overall impedance changes depending on how the speakers are wired. When you use multiple speakers, the output power from the amplifier will be distributed among the speakers. It is possible to maintain the impedance with 4 speakers, but not with 2.

Also, speaker B will sound louder than speaker A, assuming the sensitivity ratings are the same for both speakers and assuming that speaker B is not yet blown [grin]. This may stress the tubes some, but, tubes are cheaper than transformers. So what's the best way to wire a speaker cabinet? Amplified Parts makes no claims, promises, or guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, or adequacy of the contents of this article, and expressly disclaims liability for errors or omissions on the part of the author.

The 8 ohm speaker wiring impedance ohm load is considered the "Nominal Impedance" seen by the amplifier. Always check your amplifier's owners manual before wiring. For 4 ohm speakers, you get a 12 ohm load. Just thought I'd mention that. The impedances add in a series connection.

Please verify all wire colors and diagrams before applying any information. In this example the 8ohms speaker will be asked to dissipate about 33 watts, while the 4ohm speaker will 8 ohm speaker wiring to dissipate only 16 watts or so.

Since there is only one speaker, it could experience the entire 50W from the amplifier. NOTE: I get 8 ohm speaker wiring lot of people asking how to wire 2 speakers up 8 ohm speaker wiring and maintain the same impedance as one of the speakers, for 8 ohm speaker wiring taking 2 8 ohm speakers with the end result as an 8 ohm load. Email Home Page. If speaker A equals 8ohms and speaker B equals 8ohms, the total load is A plus B, or 16ohms. You have the two left speakers in parallel and the two right speakers in parallel.

For 8 ohm speakers, you get a 12 ohm load. If you lose any of the four, the one in parallel with it will still 8 ohm speaker wiring in series with the other two parallel pair, resulting in a 12 ohm load In the "series parallel" circuit as drawn above, you have the left two speakers in series with each other 8 ohm speaker wiring with the right two speakers 8 ohm speaker wiring series with each other. Speakers also have a wattage rating which indicates how much power from the amp they can handle before being damaged.

For 16 8 ohm speaker wiring speakers, you get a If the speakers do not have a common impedance, you can use formula 1 for two speakers or formula 2 for more than two speakers. Additional combinations and values may be calculated 8 ohm speaker wiring our Parallel and Series Calculators. Thank you for a good article. Each of these two sets of speakers 8 ohm speaker wiring wired in series, so we can use the equivalent series impedance formula to solve.

The speaker ohm rating is an indication of the speaker's AC impedance, which varies with the frequency of the input signal. If you were using 2 watt 8 ohm speaker wiring you'd have watts power handling. This variety allows for more flexibility in matching the overall equivalent impedance of your speaker s to the output impedance of the amplifier. The lower the impedance ohms a solid state amplifier sees the more power it will put out.

For 6 ohm speakers, you get an 18 ohm load. First, the equivalent impedance needs to be determined 8 ohm speaker wiring all speakers wired in series using the same formula as in Example 2 above.

Actual Mono load:. Close Menu. It is impossible - your only options are to wire 2 8 ohm speakers in parallel and get a 4 ohm load, or 2 8 ohm speakers in series and get a 16 ohm load please note that things of this nature are possible with cross-over networks, however, only if the 2 speakers will be responding to different frequencies.

For 4 ohm speakers, you get a 6 ohm load. In this case we recommend choosing four 8 ohm speakers with rated power of at least 25W each. Parallel Wiring - Speakers of equal impedances you divide the impedance value by the number of speakers. Open cased Jacks are easy to verify - just look at it. Again we'll assume that each speaker's impedance is 8ohms. It is important that the output impedance of your amplifier matches the overall equivalent impedance of your speaker s for maximum power transfer and so that you do not damage the amplifier.

If you do not find the information you're looking for, please post your request at the12volt's Install Bay - Mobile Electronics Forums. In example 3, we have a 50W amp with an 8 ohm output impedance.

In example 4, we have a 50W amp with an 8 ohm output impedance. Thanks, Andreas. Can I use a Resistor in place of a speaker to even out the impedance? In those instances, there will be two choices. Always check to see your amplifier's owners manual to find the best impedance for your amp. Note that the information presented in this article is for reference purposes only. In this case we 8 ohm speaker wiring choosing two 4 ohm speakers with rated power of at least 50W each.

So, this week I received an email from Scott, a WGS aficionado who was inquiring as to how he should wire his Marshall-style cabinet. This is why the spec sheet indicates this speaker to have an 8 ohm "nominal impedance. No warranty of any kind, implied, expressed, or statutory, including but not limited to the warranties of non-infringement of third party rights, title, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose, is given with respect to the contents of this article or 8 ohm speaker wiring links to other resources.

Number of Speakers? In example 3, we have a 50W amp with 8 ohm speaker wiring 8 ohm output impedance. Equivalent Mono load:. To determine the speaker values, we need to solve using the equivalent impedance formula. Ohm's Law Calculators. Worked just fine. However, if you must 8 ohm speaker wiring a load other than the recommended load, here is a short guide. Search the12volt.

Site Menu. First, the equivalent 8 ohm speaker wiring needs to be determined for all speakers wired in series using the same formula as in Example 2 above. Most of 8 ohm speaker wiring speakers are 8 ohm speaker wiring in alternative ohm ratings usually 4, 8 an 16 ohm versions. For 4 ohm speakers, you get a 2. Data Input: Speaker one's impedance? When multiple speakers are wired in series, the sum 8 ohm speaker wiring the impedance ratings of of the speakers should equal the output impedance of the amplifier.

If you were using 4 watts speakers you'd have watts power handling. For 8 ohm speakers, you get a 24 ohm load. The impedance decreases. Data Input:. Until next week So in order to solve this formula, we need to determine the impedance for the top and the bottom sets of speakers.

If you wire 4 16 ohm speakers in parallel you'd have a 4 ohm cabinet. For 16 ohm speakers, you get a Select Qty. Subwoofer Wiring Wizard. Well that depends on your power amplifier. In this case we recommend choosing two 16 ohm speakers with rated power of at least 50W each. When speakers are connected in parallel, the impedance is reduced.

If not, what are my options? Also, is there any problem with mixing a speaker rated at 15 watts with one rated at 25? Dec 31, 2. Messages: 10, You can't do that, sorry.

Converting 16 ohm Cab to 4 ohms power or sound quality loss????

how to wire two 16 ohm speakers to 8 ohm

The wiring of speakers to ensure the most effective load and to insure that they are all in phase will help to produce the best possible sound. So long so you learn a few things about installing and attaching your speakers to have an effective resistive load, this is not too complicated. Never run in a tube amplifier under 4 ohms if you are absolutely sure that the entire system can handle it properly; this can cause serious damage to the Output Transformer. A few of our bass amplifiers can effectively plug an 8-ohm amp into a ohm speaker.

Examples: Two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel will have a net impedance of (8 divided by 2) 4 ohms. If you have three speakers.

How To Convert An 8 Ohm Speaker To 4 Ohms – Noisylabs

Very often, the question is speakers louder in series or parallels asked on different forums, but still, there is not enough information that gives a good answer. It is known that multiple speakers can be wired with a single amplifier, and to connect them, we can choose a series or parallel connection. As far as connectivity is concerned, both are fine, but when we want more efficiency and louder volume, we need to choose one wisely. Speakers are louder in parallel connection because, in parallel connection, resistance decreases.

Can you mix 8 and 16 ohm speakers?

There are several ways to wire up Speakers, the most common methods are Series and Parallel which are discussed here. Wiring up Speakers correctly to provide the best possible sound, requires some knowledge of Loading, Phase, and Impedance, while understanding Ohms Law will help you to connect your speakers properly. This allows the Amplifier to run cooler and more efficiently. It is often assumed the Amplifier is producing less output, but it still produces the same output, because each Speaker only gets a percentage of the overall power. However, increasing the resistance to more than 4 ohms of speaker resistance by adding Speakers in Series, will split the amplified audio output from the Amplifier across all the Speakers in the circuit. Adding additional Speakers is as easy, however, adding Speakers in Parallel causes the overall resistance of the circuit to drop, as resistance drops, the current must increase according to Ohms Law.

From my little internet research, it looks like it's not going to be a problem but I always like to hear other's opinion on this stuff in case I need to get a different output transformer or speaker. It depends on the quality of the design and the output transformer. If it's near the edge, you probably shouldn't do it. But most valve amps will cope with a step up or down in speaker impedance, but they won't be at their best and shouldn't be run near full output if you want the amp to last. It's the sort of thing you'd do to get you through a gig if your own speaker started playing up and borrowed someone else's cab, but it's not really something you want for a permanent solution. If it were me, I'd get a new 8 ohm speaker for the amp and use the 16 ohm one for another project.

Are Speakers Louder In Series or Parallel?

Before you start Make sure the impedance rating of your speakers is 8 ohms. Any other impedance rating may cause the Amp or Connect:Amp to fault. We do not recommend wiring your speakers in series as it will result in poor sound quality.
