I strongly object this idea to change the pentrode into triode because this would be a major modification which will ruin the original design and lower the resale value. If one doesn't like the amp, why not sell it at good price and buy another one?

So far, the only pre-amp I encounter that seem to work with UK vintage amp without modification is Matisse Atom not Fantasy or Reference and the Audio Innovation L1 with gain switch set to "low".

The former is clearly a better pre-amp. Except for Quad, nearly all British vintage amp would not work with most modern or US vintage active pre-amp without modification. You have to either : 1 insert a voltage reducing resistor network in front of the power amp; or 2 use a passive pre-amp; or 3 use an active pre-amp with unusual low gain; or 4 use the matching pre-amp but even that may require modification if use CD input.

Same tube type used in the Colossus - kinda neat. Anyone heard them? How is the EF37A in general as a small-signal tube?
