Location: Bolder CO. And they're smaller! They did seem a tad harsh on strong female vocals, but that may have been the amp of source material. As a bit of history, I bought the S2 last week to audition at home and see what I thought, but to me they are not clear enough and don't seem to present a nice enough sound stage.
I do, however, love the upper midrange. I was thinking they are good enough, but perhaps not worth , so I went to BB to see if the bookshelf version in the series the would be close enough in sound quality for dollars less, but then I pressed the button to fire up the S2 set and I knew I was going to have to spend more money. Oh boy! I joined this forum today to talk about it. I do not have a modern high powered amp.
It is an amazing performer and has incredible output transformers. It could drive these at either 4 or 8 ohms.
I do not need to play loud, but I want to make sure I have enough power to wake the speakers up. How do you guys think the S2 sounds at low to medium volume like you might play some light jazz in nighttime, not rock concert levels?
I have also been auditioning a set of Klipsch RPF. I can see why some people love Klipsch and some people hate them. These are rated 98dB though I suspect 94dB is more likely. To my ears, the Klipsch have a sonic clarity and imaging that nothing I've heard touches, and the sound stage stretches from wall to wall and floor to ceiling with every little nuance of detail exposed, but I find that clarity comes with a price.
It starts to irritate me after a while and I don't want to listen any more. It's like there is just too much going on and I constantly want to tame it somehow. So far EQ has not been successful, and I would prefer not to use it if possible. I still may go with the Klipsch, but I first want to explore a bit more to see if there are better options. So basically, I am on a quest for something with a bit more refinement, but still clear and inspiring, never harsh, and works well with a 35 WPC tube amp.
I listen to jazz, country, classical, and rock. No metal, not HT with this setup. Two channel stereo only, no sub. Medium room. I would consider either floor speakers or bookshelfs on nice stands to be equally appealing.

Is it really just running one set of wires to the speaker's LF inputs and another set to the HF inputs, but connected to the exact same terminals on the amp?

I'm sure my first impression was due to out of phase connection. I'm now expecting the new amp to power them to see if they improve. I hope the amp arrives before the dealer asks me to give the speakers back. DrZhivago , Jun 9, It is really hard to believe bi wiring could make any difference.

They're still sounding brighter than the ideal for my taste but it's getting better since I corrected the phase. The music was soooo bright to a point it had no "flavor", "color", "soul" and "weight", now it's improving. I found something interesting. I just realized that digital was sounding more balanced than my LPs, less harsh. So I checked again and found a slightly misalignment in my shibata stylus, which is known for being sensitive to bad set up.
I worked on it and it's sounding much better now. So it seems like these new speakers showed me a misalignment that was not audible through my old speakers. I wonder how many times people review a piece of gear without realizing there's something wrong in the chain, giving us a wrong impression.
