Even though the Accuphase brand has been around for decades, I am still relatively new to the brand. Nothing could be further from the truth…The Accuphase has a very different, much more natural sound, and performs on a much higher level. Recent experience with two Accuphase CD players has shaped my idea about Accuphase house sound as being transparent, clean, agile, and slender. Following this, and taking into account the precise and astute style of music reproduction that seems to be preferred in Germany, I expected the E to sound transparent, open and perhaps a little analytical. How I love to be proved wrong!

We here belong to the former category, which also means we get excited every time the American icon launches a new product. The 21st century, that is. Packing watts per channel, the MA has a whopping 15 inputs — six unbalanced, two balanced, two phono MM and MC and five digital two each coaxial and optical, and one USB. The discrete, analogue eight-band tone control section can be assigned by input, letting you conduct precise adjustments according to your preferences. The phono section can be adjusted to match a variety of cartridges, a valued addition in this age of vinyl revival.
The eight-band equaliser is entirely analogue in operation, and can be called into play or bypassed using one of the five rocker switches on the fascia. The digital section here is entirely modular, and designed to be swapped out at a later stage if technology — or should that be fashion? In other words, rather than being deeply embedded in the fibre of the amplifier, the digital inputs stand alone as a discrete unit, and they merely feed into the main part of the MA As is usual, a driver will be needed for Windows computers to use the USB connection, but none is needed to connect to a Mac.
