We were approached by the client with a unique challenge: to create a home cinema experience that would incorporate the benefits of a media room. Specifically, it would feature several small and one larger picture window — eschewing the traditional windowless design. The setting was an under-used music room with a basic surround sound system, but the client wanted much more. They were also discerning about the technology: it had to be Dolby Atmos, known for its superior audio compression. We would combine this with a super-widescreen projection system to offer unparalleled viewing and listening. This involved shrewd testing, including projection throw calculations to determine which areas would offer the best sound. After deciding that a channel speaker system would work best, next it was time for us to focus on comfort. We suggested a tiered seating layout, akin to modern cinemas.

The problem with Dolby Atmos and cinema sound levels
Feel the depth, clarity, and detail fill you theater as sound moves around you in three-dimensional space. A typical surround sound system consists of left, center, and right discrete channels with the speakers behind the screen. The most immediately noticeable difference in a Dolby Atmos system is the use of overhead speakers, but that's just part of the story. Dolby Atmos defies traditional surround sound systems not only with a more extensive array of mounted speakers, but with sound that moves around you. Each movie in Dolby Atmos is tailored by movie studios to fully utilize the speaker system when telling their story; notice sound rush around you in sync with what you're seeing on-screen! Dolby Atmos combines distinct sound elements with traditional channel-based audio content. It supports up to simultaneous and lossless audio streams and allows for up to 64 discrete speaker feeds.
