Sound sensations 2014

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University seeks interdisciplinary research projects that reflect on philosophical, aesthetic, political, ecological, religious, psychoanalytical, and cultural understandings of sensation as a concept and experience that lies at the heart of the humanities and the arts. We invite considerations of how sensation might be inherent to the humanities across historical periods, disciplinary boundaries, geographic territories, and social contexts. From the earliest writings on poetics to more recent theories of mood, affect, and feelings, how might sensation shape the aesthetic experience? How have theories of the sensing body and the sensational shaped the performing and the visual arts? Has sensation been equally important to theories of poetry as to tragedy? To what extent do discourses of sensibility and sentiment across the arts intersect with histories of research in human physiology and explorations in global culture?

S Sensation Something is a kind of private diary, a network of allusions and references to musical, theoretical, and mathematical ideas that have intrigued me over the past few years. The first third of the piece is a canon that evokes well-known progressions from popular music, implicitly suggesting that we can learn to hear the structure latent in those original sources. The last third builds on a well-known association between pitch and rhythm, with each chord or scale exemplifying the groove it represents. Sprinkled in between are various other allusions, both cryptic and overt, including a slow passage based on the sound of a laser printer, a rhythmic joke about quintuplets and salsa music, and the impossible project of approximating one collection of notes with another. What is the listener supposed to take from all this? That is the question implicit in the title, which refers to the philosopher Wittenstein's famous and obscure meditation on language, communication, and privacy.

AP — The Fortune Magazine reporter whose cover story helped turn Elizabeth Holmes into a Silicon Valley sensation testified Thursday as to how he ended up feeling like a pawn in the entrepreneur's promotion of what she called a revolutionary blood-testing technology. Roger Parloff's appearance on the witness stand marked a pivotal moment in Holmes' week-old criminal fraud trial. Federal prosecutors are preparing to wrap up their case, which has aimed to prove that Holmes defrauded sophisticated investors, retailers and patients while she was CEO of Theranos, a startup she founded in when she was just After the prosecutors rest their case, Holmes' lawyers will get their turn to argue that while Holmes made mistakes in pursuit of her audacious ambitions, she never committed any crimes. Holmes, now 37, may take the stand in her defense; she faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years if the jury convicts her. She has already suffered a startling downfall since the June publication of Parloff's story on the cover of Fortune magazine. Parloff testified that he began working on the story in April shortly after being approached a representative for David Boies, a prominent lawyer who worked for Holmes and became a member of Theranos' board of directors. Holmes repeatedly promised her breakthrough would come through a blood-testing device called the Edison, which she likened to a laboratory in a compact box that could scan for hundreds of potential health issues with a few drops of blood taken with a finger prick..
