David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can. All right I know this is like my, billionth thread about these..
Oddly enough when I got the capacitors in it didn't completely solve the problem. They definitely sounded better but only enough to make them more listenable. I finally started listening to them really closely and noticed that one of the midrange units was producing an awful amount of distortion. Also one of the tweeters was clipping in and out occasionally.
What did the problem turn out to be? Well, the drivers use crimp connectors to hook up to the speakers. It turns out these were oxidized! I figured this out because I swapped the midrange units between the speakers and found they sounded identical. I knew it had to be related to the wiring at this point. I had posted about the muddy problem over at another forum and they suggested it might be oxidized crimp connectors.
Snipped 'em off, soldered the suckers on and WHOA.. So I went through and did each driver just to be on the safe side. Now that they're all fully working with a complete capacitor replacement, I can honestly say I am absolutely amazed with these speakers.
The bass is awesome - smooth and musical. The highs are airy and wonderful. The mids are clear and not too lush, just enough to be forward but coherent at the same time. Compared to the IMF's these suckers are on par.
The main difference is the coloration of the sound - I'd say the IMF's are more accurate, whereas these color the sound a bit more. It's a welcome coloration though, and even besides that they are very very close. I'd be happy with either one. The only other difference is the bass - the IMF's have a more open sound and deeper bass but everything else is very much the same. Also, raising these off the floor makes a good difference.
I'd say around " is ideal for them, tilted back I imagine would help too. If you ever get a chance to pick these up, buy them. Without question. They are so sparkly, magical, airy, open, clear, and just overall really enjoyable to listen to. I could listen to these for hours and hours and hours. Only crappy part is I don't think I'll be keeping them.. I like the IMF's bass extension and slightly more open sound, but man if I could I'd be keeping both!!
I just have too many speakers. If anyone needs help with replacing capacitors in these and wants to know what I used, just let me know.. Just do it!! These things are worth it. And of course a pixter. Last edited: Aug 15, Messages: 2, Location: Albuquerque, NM. SimplySound , Aug 16, What is their sensitivity? Ditton 44 Specs.

Unfortunately the domes on the tweets got pushed in, and upon trying to fix one I killed the tweeter dome! Haha, well, shit happens I guess. So, they've become a little project.
I've decided these are going to get some mods done to them and I'm going to keep 'em. The one that has a fully working tweeter still sounds amazing.

Now onto the scary stuff. Part availability and pricing. I'm not looking to go mad but a refresh of the components seems a good idea and if I can make things a little nicer sounding whilst there it seems silly not to. I believe tweeter upgrades are a good investment too and that a slight modification is need. Can they be successfully re-foamed or at worst replacements be bought new? Can these be successfully re-foamed or at worst replacements be bought new?

Fantastic looking vintage speakers from the 70s in very good used working condition, tested, 8" bass driver, 1" tweeter and 8" passive radiator all working fine. Both cabinets have been refurbished and refinished and are in very good condition, no damage to the cabinets but there is a small section of wear on the top edge of one cabinet, grills are in excellent condition.
The idea is great, I support it.
