Review: The VikingSoundWave DISA Bookshelf Loudspeaker
Justin Avery one day came to me with the idea of creating customised notebook for my event. I loved the ones he created before and so I listened to his idea and we played a bit of idea-pingpong to see what would fit the event, his idea and my expectations. Justin came up with a couple of great ideas of which I would have loved to do a few for Munich , but in the end, he came up with a great and good looking idea which is timeless and not connected to a specific design of an event.
The outcome was extremely high quality and now, after the first event in Munich is done, Justing has written a blog post , explaining the process from idea to final product.
I can only highly recommend working with Justin, in case you think of getting notebooks for your event done. Not only did he deliver a good product, but is a nice person as well.
A week ago from writing these lines, the lunch break of the very first beyond tellerrand in Munich was done already and we had three more talks to go, before everything was over again.
Now, on 24th of January, I look back at the event in Munich and am asking myself, whether this was real or just a dream. I mean, all the things that happened before this event actually took place. Yes, the days would have been nice as well, with not being sold out, but if you have a full house it is nicer for everybody, like the speakers, when they look down from the stage into the audience, but also for the attendees themselves.
More people mean more potentially conversations and new friends. In addition to this, the death of my mother did not help in the weeks leading up to the first Munich edition. Many people asked me during the last week, if I would continue the Munich edition. Mainly, because everything was so difficult to organise:. Actually, I am already looking into possible venues. I have to do the final maths, though, and will check venues.
If there is anything that fits my idea, the atmosphere and also my budget, why not give it another try, as I really enjoyed my time and the people being in Munich. All the videos had been online during the event already, a few blog post are already published and also photos are online from a few people already. As usual, I will keep this post up to date as long as I get material and coverage.
As said earlier, the atmosphere in Munich was great. People enjoyed the talks, had good conversations in the breaks and I have been happy to see this. In this section I usually give a bit of an insight few about what all people in the venue drank, where people travelled from and so forth. Next to visualising announcements and information for the attendees, it also shows the tweets related to the event.
I can totally recommend having a look at it, if you are running events yourself. They arrived from 4 different countries to set up the event on Monday together with me and keep my back free during the event, taking care of anything that had to do with registration, running the exhibition, taking care of the attendees and partners. My wife Tanja and Guido are coordinating the team during these days.
Delegates came from 18 different countries to attend the first beyond tellerrand in Munich. Once more Luc and Patrik from Wifi Jack aka etherTec took care of the bits travelling through the beyond tellerrand network in Munich.
About GB travelled through the wifi from different clients. Someone must have forgotten to disable the Windows auto update and I really wonder, what the 1,1 GB for Adobe were? Someone must have really been bored, as Netflix also used 1,5 GB — I hope the rest of you had a good time ;.
The concept of Side Events was to motivate other meetups and user groups to gather around the days when beyond tellerrand happens and run their events.
No one does a better job than Joschi Kuphal with this. He organised the seventh a11y club and had Marcy Sutton and Robin Christopherson as his guests. You can watch videos of their presentations on YouTube:.
The Warm-Up was hosted and organised by the lovely people from Microsoft. They offered their Atrium for our pre-conference gathering and provided food and drinks. Huge thanks once more for this! Especially to Jan Schenk and Kyle Pflug.
Wonderful to have support of people like them. During the event we had two Lunch-Time Sessions again. Keir Whitaker and Kim Fleming of Shopify hosted one on the first day, where Gavin Ballard , who came straight from Australia, gave a presentation. Right after the event was done, a couple of meetups took place in Munich, which teamed up as well and even invited speakers to give a talk.
Thanks to all of the groups who teamed up! Photos are always important to me, as they bring back memories. I myself am taking a lot of photos at events , when I attend. I try to capture the moments, when people interact, when they laugh and have fun, when they exchange. Of course, there will always be shots of the speaker on stage as well, but for me it is not important to hit the most perfect shot, but to freeze a good moment onto a photo.
Not only are blog posts by attendees, partners and speakers just great, as they bring back memories, but they are also important for any event, as they are the base on which some new attendees might decide to come to an event.
In the following block of text, I am listing all links to videos on Vimeo and YouTube , but also the link to the speaker profiles , which contain slides if given and a text version — transcription — of the talk as well. All talks were online on Vimeo on the day when they were given. Check back for updates of content related to the talks. All missing transcriptions will be added piece by piece.
The missing videos are not allowed to be published yet. As soon as they are, I will publish them. Stefan gave me the ok to publish his last talk from Berlin about Happiness, though. He published two nice videos from a day before the event as well as from the show itself on his YouTube channel.
Thanks Alex! Joschi, as mentioned earlier, also published the two videos of Marcy and Robin speaking at the a11y Club in Munich. I was happy, when bkopf from Berlin said yes to design the t-shirt for Munich and think it turned out very well. It, once more, is completely different to any of the other t-shirts, but that is what I like.
With this way of designing the shirts and the event, the attendees never know what to get and expect until they attend and it does not get boring for them, if they return.
Thanks bkopf for your great work! Another time that I bow and say: Well done and thanks so much, Sebastian! He always creates a special song for the opening, when everybody enters the room as well. As soon as he publishes this title song — if he does — I will post it right here. It is wonderful for me to see for him, that other events also use his idea to colorise their events with his audio-magic.
Tobi for the world ;. All updates will be listed below with the time I added things, so that you know if new things were added to the long text above. Easy, right? In the beginning I have written that it was 24 Januar, when I started this post. Now it is 2 Februar, when finishing the first version of this post.
I this past week, so man things happened, like the funeral of my mother, and I did not know about all the things to be done after someone dies.
This kept and keeps me busy and I am by far not as far with the wrap-up for Munich as I wish to be. Be sure you will get a newsletter soon and watch your inbox.
Thanks for a lovely time in Munich once more and see you soon hopefully. Will you be there? As for any of the past events, we have a number of scholarship tickets for beyond tellerrand which are meant to be for people, who otherwise could not afford to attend events. Write a bit about you and your background, to make it easy for us to understand, why you need a scholarship ticket.
The difference to other years, where we cover the ticket only is, that this year Chris Heilmann did not want to have his speaker fee for Munich and we decided to put it towards hotel cost for two of the scholarship tickets. This means: two of the tickets will also have two nights of hotel including breakfast being covered. Please make up your mind and think about, if you really need the hotel as well or if it is already helping enough for you if the ticket is covered.
BTW: Do you know that there is a platform called Diversity Tickets on which many events are listed, offering diversity or scholarship tickets? A good overview with information and many events. The staging is made for you to be immerged into the speech of the speaker. Hello dear traveller. I start this blog post with this quote by Emily as I think she pretty much sums up, what the difference between watching a talk online on YouTube or Vimeo and being at an event is.
And this is not meant only for my own event, but what I think in general: attend more events. Thanks for writing this, Emily! The weather during the event was incredible sunny and nice. I am still dizzy because of all the impressions and reactions to my little event. Thanks a lot for all the positive energy and feedback! Not sure, if I would find the energy every time to organise and run beyond tellerrand without your warm and wonderful responses.
Now, at this point I usually give you a few numbers of the last btconf edition. I am missing the information concerning data usage over the wifi as well as the list of what has been drunken during the very sunny days.
But of the people in total, who have been at the event during the two days, those who answered a few questions they were optional during the registration said, that are employed , where are freelance or self-employed. All of these people tweeted times about the event, according to my ConfWall stats. More stats soon. My wife Tanja and Guido , my good long-time friend coordinated the team during these days.

How many Americans today would have any idea what you were talking about if you mentioned the 38th parallel? Why go back to war now? Was the current state of affairs with North Korea an impetus? It did seem to me, with all the recent developments in our relations with China and North Korea, that this was an auspicious time to tell this story. I wanted to go back and try to understand the deeper roots of what got us to where we are now.
