How to Install and Set Up a Home Theater Receiver

Source Devices are easy to identify as they generally only have AV Outputs - they play your media and send the audio and video signals OUT. Hub Devices can be trickier, as they accept both Inputs and Outputs - they do all the sorting to organise multiple home theatre components. Let's look at a simple home theatre setup that comprises of a couple of Source devices - a Games Console and a Blu-ray Player - along with a Television and a Surround Sound speaker system controlled by an AV Receiver.

In this example, the Console and Blu-ray player are source devices. The AV Receiver has Inputs which can accept both of these signals in - you select which one is active with your remote control - which it then sorts and sends on through its Outputs. Because it has both inputs and outputs, it's what we consider a hub device. Finally, the Television receives video data with its Input, and the Speakers receive decoded analogue audio signals, making them sink or destination devices.

A games console may have input sockets for controllers or cartridges, but they're outside of the scope of this guide. We're just dealing with audio and video AV. Keeping your home theatre linear like this can make life easier, but this isn't always possible when new technologies emerge that aren't compatible with all of your equipment. Bypassing your AV Receiver is covered in a different blog,. Home Theatre wiring becomes more complex when source and destination devices have features that contradict their traditional roles.

For example:. Features like these can allow some components to work like Hubs under certain circumstances. Let's look at an example where a TV is being used as a hub device rather than as a destination device. The main benefit of this method is that everything shown on the TV plays audio through the speaker system, including free-to-air TV if connected.

One drawback is that you're mostly limited to 5. TVs and Projectors which have Headphone Jacks or 2-RCA analogue stereo outputs can also be used in the manner shown above, but you can only get regular stereo audio this way. Still, even a cheap pair of powered speakers should sound better than the ones built into your telly! This effectively makes an HDMI input also an output - but only for audio!

This example shows free-to-air television stations being received via a rooftop antenna plugged directly into a TV with a built-in digital tuner. Switches, Splitters and True Matrixes are all considered hub devices as they accept one or more inputs, sort the signals, and direct them to one or more outputs. We have a whole blog dedicated to these devices, what they do, and when to use them.

We also have animated signal flow diagrams there - check it out! Now we can really see how the information is flowing. Here, we have a home theatre with a TV and Projector set up to show video from any one of three sources one at a time ; a Laptop, a Games Console and a Blu-ray player.

The 5. In this instance, the projector would not be able to show any TV stations, unless it had a built-in tuner and was also connected to the rooftop antenna. All other sources are available on both screens after a quick fiddle with the relevant remote controls! By understanding how information moves between Outputs and Inputs, you can start to piece together a hypothetical home theatre system like a jigsaw puzzle, and figure out what solution will work best for you.

New technologies are starting to reverse some of these guidelines, but for the sake of preventing information overload, we're sticking to the basics here! It's our job to know about all the different ways a home theatre can be configured in order to get the most out of it, and there's no way we can cover our entire catalogue in a single blog! So, if you're stuck on how best to wire up your home theatre, don't hesitate to contact us - we'll find a solution or at the very least point you in the right direction to avoid a wild goose chase.

You may still have many video tapes that you like to play but find it hard to connect a VCR to your new flat screen TV. This needs to be done for both the video and for the audio. Some VCRs have one audio out socket mono and some have two audio out sockets stereo — we will look at stereo first, and look at the differences for mono later in this article. To connect a VCR to most flat screen TVs, you will need a cable with these yellow, red and white connectors. For non European VCRs, you will need a cable with these plugs at each end. The yellow, red and white plugs are often called RCA or Phono plugs. The yellow cable is used for the video signal, the red cable for the right audio, and the white cable for the left audio signal. Many VCRs come with these leads supplied. This photo shows the standard connectors on most stereo VCRs. The top right red socket is for the right audio out.

Great news — there are other ways to do it. The connectors listed above apply to both a standard or a smart TV — it always depends on the particular model. Digital outputs work by transmitting audio represented in digital format made up of bits of information. Newer AV receivrs with these types of inputs can decode the digital signal back to sound and amplify it to drive speakers. Analog jacks are a non-digital output that can be amplified to drive speakers by any compatible receiver or amp with auxiliary, DVD, or CD inputs.

Let's give the HDMI cable some credit. It helped clean up the tangled mess of wires behind our TVs, gave us a way to quickly link a stunning range of devices with a new generation of displays, and provided a sturdy backbone for the HD revolution.

Home theater receivers are the central hub of a home theater system. In addition to providing power to the speakers, receivers handle all video source switching, audio decoding, video processing, and connectivity features. The exact steps for setting up an AV receiver depend on the brand and model, but the overall process is basically the same. When unpacking a home theater receiver, take note of what it comes with. What we're going to do in this guide amounts to two thing: breaking down the mysteries of the rear of the receiver, explaining what all those ports and connections are, and then explaining how to connect it all up with an example setup. We are, by the way, going to skip the power port. Their purpose is a mystery. As a test subject, we are going to be using a very hefty

Its purpose is to receive audio and video signals from a number of sources, and to process them and provide power amplifiers to drive loudspeakers and route the video to displays such as a television , monitor or video projector. The AVR source selection and settings such as volume, are typically set by a remote controller. The term "receiver" basically refers to an amplifier , typically at least a two-channel stereo model, that has a built-in radio tuner. The receiver performs tasks that would otherwise require numerous separate pieces of equipment, such as preamplifiers, equalizers, multiple power amplifiers, and so on.
