Family members struggle to make ends meet on military pay. And heaven help our soldiers if they make a mistake in battle. American military personnel are subject to intensive rules of conduct and engagement.
Meanwhile, Blackwater personnel receive superior pay and benefits with much less important duty. They often have better equipment at their disposal. Scahill makes a compelling point in his book. Today marks 10 years since the Storms River blackwater tubing tragedy in which 13 people died, but the families still remember their loved ones and the memories of the disaster remain as fresh as they were yesterday. A memorial service is being held today to commemorate the victims and mark the 10th anniversary of the fateful day when a group of 24 people — employees at Engen headquarters in Port Elizabeth, members of a prominent legal firm and four river guides — ventured out on a team- building exercise. However catastrophe hit on March 25, , when unbeknown to the rafters — who were in the care of Stormsriver Adventures — a river had dammed up higher in the mountains and was about to burst, releasing a two-metre-high wall of water which swallowed 13 people. Of the 11 survivors, nine managed to climb to safety up a wire ladder and wooden steps — while two others, river guide Jaco Swart and attorney Pieter Cilliers, spent 36 hours clinging to rocks awaiting rescue.
