TRT World spoke with some members of the Jewish community to hear their take on the series - which was unanimously positive.

The students who are eligible for the Turkiye Scholarships and who also do not speak Turkish are granted free Turkish language training for one year. How many times have you found yourself in a state of self-loathing or panic trying to find the equivalent of a word or phrase you use in your native language only to realize that there is simply no satisfactory equivalent of it in a foreign language, so you just stand there trying to explain what you mean with an awkward, embarrassed grin on your face? Every language is borne out of a different culture and thus is connected to its people. When you interact with a language other than your own, you are also interacting with the culture that speaks the language and get a sense of how they live, think and express their emotions. Learning a new language is hard, and speaking Turkish is surely a challenge for Anglophones. Yes, for some it is easier than others, but getting used to an alien set of grammatical rules and word structures on top of a flurry of loanwords and creative, envelope-pushing idioms and proverbs is no easy feat.

Despite my love for Turkey, one aspect of living in the country that I absolutely hate is learning how to speak Turkish. Many expats live in Turkey without speaking the language but I believe that life is a lot easier when you know the lingo. So anyone who wants to be bilingual goes through three stages when learning a language. I can speak, read and write an intermediate level of Turkish but I have one big stumbling block. I cannot pronounce the words properly. I avoid saying many words because mispronouncing one vowel can change the whole meaning of what I am trying to say. The larger study investigated the following research question: What is the role and function of a Turkish Saturday school in developing and maintaining Turkish language and constructing a Turkish cultural identity in the United States? It employed a conceptual framework combining language shift and maintenance, linguistic identity and ideology. Four building blocks of Discourses were found in the Turkish community school.
