Just picked up a load of hi-fi seperates for messing around with in my new "man" space. All Technics, circa , and I am being blown away by the quality of sound. For so many years now I have been fiddling around with half baked noise and mp3 nonsense and to hear music playing in my home at the quality I was accustomed to back in the eighties is just magical.

There has to be stacks of decent kit kicking around just waiting for folk like me to snap them up and enjoy. Technics were never big in the seperates world apart from pro spec turntables for dj's but the sound off this system is blowing me away and has turned my muzac into music. Not a rant Dust off some of that 80's 90's hardware and put it to use and enjoy! In reply to jim robertson: Yeah, it's amazing the crappiness of sound quality people will put up with! Mind you, I was impressed by the results my mate achieved by putting his iPod through a valve iPod dock, decent amp and decent speakers on stands.

People think they won't be able to tell, but once you've heard the decent stuff, anything else is like sensory deprivation! PaulMarshall 10 Nov In reply to jim robertson: I've got a Technics amp that I love and it's ancient.

It's even had the same dead spider in it for over a decade. In reply to jim robertson: i still haven't chucked out my leak amp and valve tuner- never use them though.. In reply to jim robertson: only audiophiles could distinguish mp3s from cds on a mid-range system.. Alan Taylor 10 Nov In reply to jim robertson: I still have my old Nad and it still sounds great. Daithi O Murchu 10 Nov In reply to jim robertson: I've never had anything else.

Tried to donate a set upto my 18 year old but she looked at me like I'd suggested black and white tv. David Hooper 10 Nov In reply to jim robertson: When Ive paid my cottage off , I will be getting a Michell Gyrodec or similar. I think the most important thing is actually the production standards of the LP, CD or whatever.

I had a big "Malcolm McClaren" chrome one with hinged speakers that swung in to protect the dials or could be unhinged and strung out on wires. Never got round to customising or spray painting it, or gluing a pair of buffalo horns on - my ikkle ipod just aint the same.

Hardonicus 10 Nov In reply to jim robertson: My Marantz and Technics take pride of place alongside my walnut finshed Wharfdales. In reply to jim robertson: I got rid of my very old seperates a couple of years ago. None of them matched and they took up so much room. Sadly my speakers were never up to much. My Dad still has seperates and has a set of full size speakers, at least a metre high, which he's had since I was very small.

LastBoyScout 10 Nov In reply to jim robertson: A friend of mine sells amplifier kits for serious audio anoraks. They're not cheap some are thousands of dollars , but the sound is amazing! I've heard the test rig in his basement - it's amazing! Guns 'n' Roses on vinyl sounds like you are at the concert. In reply to jim robertson: I can't even remember what most of my HiFi gear is, it's been up in the loft awaiting living room decoration that long!

You can hear the difference between MP3 and CD on a half decent system, CD is much richer as it doesn't clip and compress the digital information like MP3 does. Unfortunately, I'm lazy and buy most of my music in MP3 format downloads now so I won't get the full benefit when I eventually do dust off the old amp and speakers. The Pylon King 11 Nov In reply to jim robertson: My old wax cylinder set up is the biz!

Bring back 8 track cartridge, thats what i say! Hardonicus 11 Nov In reply to teflonpete: To be fair a lot of CDs are clipped an compressed due to shitty mastering. Tall Clare 11 Nov In reply to jim robertson: My separates are still at my parents' house, but I'll need to get them back. I'd still love to get a decent Maranrz CD player and some Mission speakers, but doubt I'd ever justify the costs now I'm a grownup It didn't work properly.

She replaced a fuse in it and it worked again. For a week. Then it died. It sounded rubbish anyway! In reply to Blue Straggler: Ive got a load of dansettes. Didnt get round to doing it but theres still time! David Hooper 11 Nov In reply to Dark Mavis: Do it - no slip mats either as they are belt and not direct drive.

In reply to jim robertson: I got 2 sets of seperates got both for free. Both sound great only problem being that i've no idea how to store things etc. Paul Atkinson 11 Nov In reply to jim robertson: Hifi is a serious and rapidly progressing degenerative disease. I went down the mad upgrade path for years but eventually ended up happy and cured.

Still have to say there's nowt like beautiful music beautifully recorded and played back as it was meant to be heard. It's always nice to wipe the smile of the face of the "I wouldn't be able to hear the difference" brigade when they actually get the chance to, errrr, hear the difference. I haven't had a anyone deny it yet. Fraser 12 Nov In reply to jim robertson: If anyone's interested in a pair of excellent and little-used Mission ? Glasgow area. Paul Atkinson 12 Nov In reply to jim robertson: yes the longevity of a lot of the kit is amazing.

One of my mates - the wrong side of divorce - is running an LP12 and Naim amps he has had since the early 80s when it would have cost him a fortune and it sounds fantastic.

I think very few people get to hear kit like this and are consequently happy and richer with the fairly dismal performance of MP3 - it's very nice having an ipod for running and travel though. Fashion is a major factor and the hifi mags have a lot to answer for with their need to keep saying new stuff and attract advertisers meaning their reviews are pretty meaningless - they can't just tell the truth and keep the same few products at the top for ever.

As you say the obsession with high quality sound is a very male thing - there are few things nerdier in life than a comparative listening session at the hifi shop. I hope you haven't rekindled my dormant upgraditis cheers, P. Nic 12 Nov In reply to graeme jackson: was hoping for "shared obsession" rather than "bragging" to come across nice kit P. In reply to jim robertson: i use my Maratz hifi almost daily. Siward 12 Nov In reply to jim robertson: My old Sony system blows away MP3 stuff, the speakers are better than the top of the range Warfedale ones we had years ago.

I will be keeping my cassette decks to play all the rare stuff I have recorded. Broadcasts by people no longer around, conversations with relatives long dead, Girl friends and wife from over the years etc. I ask about recording conversations and meetings on modern portable stuff and get met with blank stares in all the shops I visit. Want to record a programme off the radio when out, just stick in a tape and set the timer to record it for later.

Not found anything else for that sort of thing relatively cheap. Mike Stretford 12 Nov In reply to jim robertson: Welcome home. In reply to graeme jackson: I said cheap, and it is not really good for carting round to record conversations is it? BTW, there is no freeview etc here without satellite, in fact listening to the supposedly local radio station is useless as in a crap reception area for everything. In reply to Hardonicus: I had a full stack of Marantz seperates with a graphic equaliser.

My ipod playing through it's dock just doesn't compare. Its digital equaliser is flat compared to the analogue I presume equaliser.

Ross McGibbon 12 Nov In reply to Blue Straggler: I was going for a minidisc a few years ago but MarcC had one but could not source a suitable microphone for his so gave up on the idea. If anyone has one going with mic I would be interested.
