It's a bummer, but here's what to do if you happen to blow a speaker in your amplifier. An unfortunate inconvenience, mostly. For musicians, though—especially working musicians—blown speakers in a guitar amp or bass amp or PA system are far more than an inconvenience.

They can be a major problem that threatens a gig or a session. What blows a speaker? And what should you do if you have a blown speaker?

The most common aural indication of a blown speaker is an unpleasant buzzing or scratching sound, by itself or roughly at the pitch of the note the speaker is attempting to reproduce.

Or there could be no sound at all. Amp manufacturers use intensely rigorous testing procedures to ensure this level of quality and compatibility, making blown instrument amp speakers a highly improbable occurrence. Nonetheless, it is in the nature of any technology to experience occasional problems, and speakers do blow once in a great while despite the best efforts of the amplification industry to ensure otherwise.

Repair or, more likely, replacement. More expensive component loudspeakers that are sold individually, such as those by JBL and Electro-Voice, can often be repaired and re-coned re-coning a speaker means not just replacing the speaker cone, but replacing all the moving parts that constitute the speaker cone assembly; this includes the voice coil.

Breaking Down Blown Speakers

1969 Fender Deluxe Reverb: Original Power Transformer and Choke Set

The output transformer has the toughest job in a vacuum tube amplifier. It must transform the high impedance signal at the plate of the output tube to a low impedance signal for the speaker. Ideally this happens for all audio frequencies, at all power levels from zero to full power, without distortion or phase shift. No transformer is perfect, not even close. Even the best transformers will saturate at high power and low frequencies. Transformer saturation yields a particularly nasty sounding form of distortion. At low power there is a threshold effect where for very small input signals there is no output signal. This and the saturation effect is due to the nonlinearities in the cores magnetic curve BH curve. All transformers exhibit an excessive phase shift at frequency extremes.

Essentially two vintage British-style amps in one, the valve rectified twin channel AD Series recaptures the warm, time-honoured EL84 sound that defined an era. The AD30 is two vintage amps in one, made in England with classic Orange styling. The channels have two separate signal paths but are voiced differently. Channel One is the cleaner channel, with channel Two being the classic crank-it and go channel. With two stages of gain, the amplifier gives players power amp distortion, for that classic vintage tone. The valve rectifier is key to the amps sound, giving controlled natural compression in the power supply, making it perfect for country pickers through to indie artists.

The Specials 'Ghost Town'

The danger point is connecting too high an impedance, but 16 ohm speaker on 4 ohm tap is tolerable - it's just not correct for proper power matching. Similarly for 4 ohm speaker on 16 ohm tap. An open circuit no speaker load is an infinite impedance and a valve amp should not be played signal continuously applied under these circumstances as damage to the output transformer or output valves could result. Thanks everyone for clearing up my doubt. Even if it was 16 ohms load connected to a 4 ohms tap or 4 ohms load to a 16 ohm tap. It would just be wrong but wouldn't necessarily blow something up.
