The HeadStreamer is shipped in a simple white cardboard box protected with bubble wrap. No software is required and the HeadStreamer uses the volume control of your computer without the associated loss of quality this normally implies.

The front panel of the HeadStreamer indicates the sampling rate up to 96k and also has an indicator for mute — a simple and helpful addition. As you can see from the photo, the assembly of the HeadStreamer is very simple. The circuit board slides along two channels of the extruded aluminium case and is secure with 4 tiny screws. The front and rear panels are textured plastic. From my perspective, the fit and finish of the HeadStreamer is acceptable.

Clearly the design has been optimized to minimize manufacturing costs. In addition, the velvet carrying case just feels cheap. I would have gladly paid a few dollars more for a product that showed more refinement. Out of the box, I found the HeadStreamer to initially sound thin, tinny and have very weak bass.

However, my early disappointment quickly faded. This is clearly a device that requires break in. The sound improved even after a few hours of use.

As this review is written, the HeadStreamer has approximately 40 hours of use on it. On the HeadStreamer, the same music sounds thin, blurred, and lifeless. Heavily synthesized music fairs better. While the HeadStreamer is a definite improvement over the built-in headphone jack in the Mac, more heavily processed content appears to emphasize its strengths over its weaknesses.
