Thread starter thekingbeyond Start date Nov 11, I have just sold my Kef s and took as a part exchange 2 x kef lower bass cabinets with crossovers, but no drivers.
The bass is ported through the top front via a grill. Anyway I had a mad idea I did try this with some kef racetrack drivers I had lying about and it seemed to work, but I have no idea what 10 inch speakers would be suited or if it would be a viable option. The bass cabinets actually have a lot in common with Kef's Reference AV1 subwoofer, Same drivers, same bandpass design - just a different shape and of course the AV1 had it's own sub amplifier.
There's no reason why you couldn't drop other 10" drivers in and get very good results, they'd have to be the right sort of drivers though. Time to put all the specs into WinISD 4th Order Bandpass and see what comes up as usable The chances of the crossover working accurately with different bass drivers and different top sections is highly unlikely though!
I haven't been able to find much info on the B SP bass driver, I was considering converting the cabinets into subwoofers and using a sub amp to power them. You must log in or register to reply here. An understated revolution in loudspeaker design has been taking place in Kent. KEF's Technical Director Laurie Fincham has put together a team of engineers who have been quietly but thoroughly examining the fundamentals of moving-coil, box loudspeaker behaviour, spinning off a regular series of products, starting with the original R nearly a decade ago. Some years back, in a AES paper entitled 'A bandpass loudspeaker enclosure', Fincham outlined a strategy for a different kind of woofer loading. The result, surprisingly, was that differences in LF cut-offs below the nominal range of human hearing can nevertheless be distinguished subjectively. The reason, it was suggested, is that the inevitable group delay associated with the bass high-pass filter action introduces deleterious effects much higher in frequency than the nominal cut-off point.
