This can be remedied by increasing the acoustic absorption in the room. As well as providing thermal insulation when placed in the cavity of a partition wall, Thermafleece adds a significant amount of sound insulation. The graph shows the difference in sound insulation values between a stud wall with an empty mm cavity, and the same construction, but with a mm quilt of Thermafleece in the cavity. Sound insulation has been improved by around 10dB through much of the frequency range. A 10dB reduction is akin to halving the level of sound that a person would experience. Thermafleece can help to absorb sound to reduce the reverberation time of echoey rooms. Thermafleece shows excellent acoustic absorption properties, with some useful absorption available at the low frequency end of the spectrum.

We are acousticians with a deep understanding of the engineering of the whole building. This gives us a practical and a theoretical appreciation of the work of our colleagues in the design team. With this perspective, our Acoustics Team can apply their engineering specialism to the best effect and in the most efficient way. We have the experience and knowledge to design and deliver quality acoustic environments in everything from large-scale performance venues to residential bedrooms. Room acoustics can affect the feel of the internal environment almost as much as the architecture, design and decoration. Done well, the acoustic treatment will complement the architectural design without detracting from the aesthetics of a space. My approach is to make a usable and comfortable space, whatever the inherent constraints. In projects, there's often a choice to be made about when to start discussions on acoustics. I believe that thinking about this at an early stage of the design process means we can beautifully integrate our solution with the architecture.

He has worked in the field of acoustics for 25 years, during which time he has delivered noise assessments, design and manufactured acoustic elements for sawmill industries, occupational noise exposure and intelligibility corrections for large spaces. Ricardo has built up extensive experience of both Industrial noise control and electro — acoustic implementation, covering budgeting, purchases and providing solutions. Project Management services over period of 15 years for controlling hazardous noise in industrial sawmills for specific project developments. Responsibilities included investigating noise control measures for blowers, chipper canter lines, finger jointing equipment, sanders, routers, planers and trimmers. Active in the application of acoustic louvres, silencers, acoustic doors and acoustic windows for corporate offices and many other case studies within the sawmill and cellulose plants.

He has worked at J P French Associates since and has expertise in authentication, enhancement, transcription and speaker comparison. He also carries out research with the University of York in the fields of forensic speech and audio analysis: into the efficacy of acoustic analysis software, measuring the performance of biometric systems and evaluating methods for expressing the strength of forensic speech evidence. He is playing a key role in developing quality standards in the field in conjunction with the Forensic Science Regulator.

Environmental Monitoring for Sound and Vibration
The use of smartphone sound measurement apps can have a tremendous and far-reaching impact in the areas of noise research and noise control in the workplace as every smartphone can be potentially turned into a dosimeter or a sound level meter [Maisonneuve et al. However, in order for smartphone apps to gain acceptance in the occupational environment, the apps must meet certain minimal criteria for functionality, accuracy, and relevancy to the users in general and the worker in particular. NIOSH noise researchers received numerous requests from stakeholders, safety professionals, and the public to address the accuracy of the many sound measurement applications available for smartphones and whether they can be relied upon to provide an accurate assessment of the ambient environment. As a result, we conducted a pilot study to select and characterize the functionality and accuracy of these apps as an initial step in a broader effort to determine whether these apps can be relied on to conduct participatory noise monitoring studies in the workplace [Kardous and Shaw, ]. The resulting paper, Evaluation of smartphone sound measurement application , was published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. We selected and acquired a representative sample of the popular smartphones and tablets on the market as of June Smartphone apps were selected based on their ability to measure occupationally relevant sound level values.
