CARVIN Vintage 16 1 x 12″ all valve guitar combo amplifier
This isn't an amp to rock stadiums with but on a smaller scale, if you're looking for a fab tone at a great price, this one's a no-brainer. Carvin has been building quality American guitar amplifiers since , and its new Vintage 16 model will be a Holy Grail for many players; this all-valve 1x12 combo's looks wouldn't even disgrace the poshest of living rooms. It's switchable down to five watts for practice or recording with real, grownup tone, yet at full power can handle rehearsals and even small gigs. Admittedly, not the biggest dilemma ever….
Carvin Steve Vai Legacy 3 Amp in Tan
Channels 1 and 2 are unchanged from the original Legacy, but a third channel has been added to the amp, along with a new high-gain option for this channel. For players unfamiliar with the sound of this amp, the Legacy III features a nice array of vintage sounding American and British tones well suited to a variety of players in the hard rock, metal, and blues genres. It can operate at Watts, 50 Watts, or 15 Watts, selectable via a switch on the rear of the amp. The design is decidedly retro in appearance. Our review unit came dressed brown on brown, but Seafoam Green… err, we mean Vai Green, is also an option. Other features include a clean boost user adjustable, up to 6dB , digital reverb, and a series effects loop. The control layout is pretty straightforward. Channel 1 the clean channel has Treble, Mid, Bass, and Volume controls, plus a Presence toggle switch that increases harmonics in the kHz range. Channels 2 and 3 share a three-band EQ Bass, Mid, Treble and then each has controls for Presence a full range control, unlike the fixed setting on the clean channel , Drive, and Volume. Channel 3 adds a toggle switch for engaging an additional gain circuit.

Carvin was founded in by Lowell Kiesel as the L. Kiesel Company in Los Angeles. Kiesel relocated briefly to his home state of Nebraska, but returned to California in , and changed the name of the company to Carvin, after his two eldest sons, Carson and Gavin. The company began by making pickups and other accessories, and then branched out to amplifiers, guitars, basses and other gear.

Carvin Audio in the USA has announced the end of its amp making operations, as well as a liquidation sale to help them shift the last of their stock. The company is famous for making amplifiers for the likes of Steve Vai and so this will be quite a shock for many of their fans. This US company has been around for 70 years. This closure is a great shame, I think, as they have made some great products, including the Carvin Legacy signature guitar amplifier for Steve Vai. You could pick up some really great equipment from this Californian company. We hope to see our gear live on in your musical lives for many years to come!
