David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can. Log in or Sign up. Messages: 1, Location: Clinton, NY. I have an ST 70 and a pair of time frames that will take up to W.
Will this be okay or am I wasting my speakers capabilities? In other words, would W per channel be a whole lot different than 35 tube watts per channel?? This is not a high volume application, but I hate a muted, underpowered sound. My real dilemma is whether to spend a bunch of money with the technician to fix up my original, pristine Dynakits or buy a big ass integrated or power amp for my time frames.
Of course, at some point I would do up the Dynakits anyway. I just don't want to spend the money, do up the system in my mancave, and have these beauties sound woefully underpowered.
And please don't tell me I should redo the Dynakits myself. Simply do not have the time. And I want them to be glowing by Christmas. Thank you friends, Tom. Actually using watts of power will likely make you go deaf. I'm running a 20 watt tube amp with 91 db speakers, and I never turn the gain very far beyond 12 o'clock.
You'll be fine with Zvezda , Nov 6, Messages: 54, Location: Southern NJ. I'm running 89 db efficient speakers on a screaming 12 watts out in the workshop.
Its not earth moving volume, but it performs solidly enough. No muffly nonsense to report. Upstairs I've got about 24 watts running 92 or 93 db efficient speakers, no problems shaking the paint up here.
Messages: 7, Location: Alameda CA. If you listen at volumes that allow normal conversation or just a bit louder then that you should be fine with the Dyna. You might want to address the issue of their muddy midrange and treble.
Upping the coupling caps from 0. It may be different for your system however. Messages: Location: North Texas. Messages: Location: New York. Elliot Thompson , Nov 7, Messages: The best way for you to know what is happening when you listen - is to measure. Get yourself some power meters APM, APM and the like wire them up to your speakers just attach them to the same posts and see what wattage you are using.
But, it will show that you are probably only using watts from your amp at normal listening volumes. Are there transients that go outside that 10 watts - sure, but the point I'm making is this: With 92db speakers - 1 watt will get you 92db.
So you can see that your ST 35 watts is perfectly adequate. Now I think that is insanely loud. For me 95 DB is plenty loud - in home. However, some folks like the idea that they can literally recreate a concert in their home.
If that is you - then you can see that you will not reach that with your ST To get to DB your speakers will need watts. Also - all of this does not take into account your room effects and is purely academic, but at least it starts to paint a picture of what is happening.
In short - find an amp, whose sweet spot power output takes your X db sensitive speakers to the X volume db you want to listen at and you'll be happy. Last edited: Nov 7, You must log in or sign up to reply here.

Are you curious to discover what wattage is typical for different high-quality speakers and fill your surroundings with sound? Most good speakers range from 10 watts to watts peak. The benefit of greater wattage is the possible volume boost and more solid tone quality and coverage at lower volumes. Good outdoor speakers will usually have around 80 watts. For computer speakers , look for 10 to 25 watts. Party speakers will have around W, and high-quality Bluetooth speakers will most likely be between 40 to 60 watts. A solid soundbar will have about watts, and boat speakers will have around W. Mean power, or root mean square RMS power handling, points to how much continuous power the unit can run. The peak power handling rate relates to the highest power level that the speaker can handle in short bursts.

Do you know that booming sounds can damage your ears and may cause permanent or temporary hearing loss? I was researching this fact a couple of months ago to understand sounds and the excellent dB for speakers. Of course, sounds come in decibels dB , and you can get the sound decibels by measuring it with a decibel meter. Moreover, the higher the decibel is, the louder the sound would be. An increase in decibels does not increase the sound arithmetically, but exponentially.
A decibel dB represents the ratio of two variables on a logarithmic scale, and has no base unit e. Using a logarithmic scale is a much better approximation of human hearing than the linear variables. As well, the gigantic ratio of barely perceptible sound pressure the auditory threshold to the loudest tolerable sound pressure pain threshold of 1: 3,, is compressed into a much more manageable scale of 0 to dB.
