Sony HT-S40R home theatre system review: Outstanding performance for its price

We purchase our own soundbars and put them under the same test bench, so that you can compare the results easily. No cherry-picked units sent by brands. We've currently tested nine Sony soundbars.

Sony produces sturdy, well-built soundbars. They tend to excel in dialogue reproduction, but their lack of sound enhancement features can be a drawback if you want a touch more bass or treble in your mix.

As Sony produces soundbars at several price points, they can range in features. This 7. It has a good stereo frequency response that can reproduce voices and lead instruments well. It can also produce a thumpy, rumbly bass that's well-suited for action flicks or EDM tracks.

That said, it comes with EQ presets so you can adjust its sound profile. If you're a big movie buff, it supports Dolby Atmos, and it has a variety of inputs like three Full HDMI In ports that make it easy to use the bar as a hub between your TV and other devices like a Blu-ray player.

It also supports a lot of audio formats like eARC, and you can passthrough 4k content. You can even stream your favorite audio to the bar using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Chromecast built-in. Unfortunately, its sound enhancement features are a bit limited, and you can't fine-tune its bass or treble.

It also has a disappointing surround performance, especially as it doesn't come with discrete surround speakers. While it can get loud, there are also some compression artifacts present at max volume.

Still, if you're looking for a soundbar that offers lots of connectivity and audio format support, it's a suitable choice with a versatile overall performance. This 3. It has many connectivity options, and it supports all common audio formats, including DTS and Atmos.

Although it lacks a bit of low bass, it has a balanced sound profile that should be suitable for most audio genres. If you prefer a different sound, there are EQ presets which could better enhance your experience. It can get loud, making it well-suited for large rooms or crowded environments like a house party. As it supports eARC, you can even play the most advanced object-based surround signals as well as high-quality lossless formats.

You can wirelessly stream to the bar using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi if you prefer. Unfortunately, it doesn't have many sound enhancement features, and you can't adjust bass or treble. There's also no room correction feature, which is a little disappointing. Although it supports Atmos content, due to its configuration, it uses Sony's Vertical Surround Engine to simulate an Atmos experience, which isn't as immersive as models with upward-firing speakers or with dedicated satellites.

That said, it can reproduce clear and accurate speech, and it's even one of the best soundbars for dialogue that we've tested. This budget-friendly 2. Despite its small size, it can still get decently loud without much compression at max volume. Its balanced mid-range can reproduce voices and lead instruments clearly, though they can also sound a bit dark.

There are some EQ presets and a bass adjustment feature to help you customize its sound, and there's also a dialogue enhancement feature available. Unfortunately, this soundbar struggles to reproduce the deep thump and rumble in the low-bass, so it may not be ideal for fans of bass-heavy music and action-packed movies. Due to its 2. That said, if you're on a tight budget, it's still a solid choice.

While this simple 2. Although it has a fairly neutral but slightly muddy sound profile, it can accurately reproduce dialogue in your favorite TV shows or podcasts. If you want to enhance vocal clarity, it also has a dialogue enhancement feature. The bar can get loud enough to fill a large or crowded room, and there are minimal compression artifacts at max volume. Unfortunately, since it lacks a dedicated subwoofer, it lacks a thumpy low-bass, which fans of EDM or action-packed movies may find disappointing.

This bar also lacks more robust sound enhancement features like an EQ or presets. That said, this affordable soundbar offers a step up from your TV's integrated speakers without breaking the bank. Sony makes a wide range of soundbars at several price ranges, so it's easy to find one that works for your budget. Although this range is large and available features vary, Sony soundbars are generally well-built but ordinary in overall sound performance.

When compared to Samsung soundbars, Sony isn't as well-rounded in performance. Some models can also struggle to produce a deep, rumbling bass suitable for movies or music. Since most Sony soundbars lack bass and treble adjustments, the basic preset EQ offered in their place may not be enough customization for some users.

These soundbars are well-suited for dialogue-centric content and should be more than adequate for everyday use. Oct 15, No changes in product picks. Minor updates to the text after verifying their accuracy and availability. Feb 18, Verified the text and checked for product availability.

There hasn't been a change in our picks. Sony is a well-known brand offering a variety of soundbars across several price points. Overall, they're sturdy and well-built. They're also well-suited for reproducing dialogue, great for your favorite TV shows and audiobooks.

Unfortunately, if you don't like their default sound profile, Sony only provides EQ presets, making it challenging to fine-tune your audio experience.

Best Home Theater System for the Perfect Movie Nights

Soundbars come in all sizes, prices, and configurations. Some excel at providing two-channel stereo, while others opt for 3. Do all of these high-flying capabilities justify its equally lofty price tag? We put it to the test. At just over 51 inches wide, 3. Unless your TV is already wall-mounted or you plan to do so, best take some measurements before you hit that buy button.

Sony HT-A7000 soundbar review: "Unlike anything I've heard before"

Every good home theater starts with two fundamentals: the largest and sharpest screen possible, and high-quality surround sound to accurately reproduce the multi-channel soundtracks of modern films and digital entertainment. For years, that meant doing some extensive and, sometimes, expensive wiring for at least five separate speakers plus a subwoofer. But if you are willing to settle for very good , then you now have another option: a wireless surround system. Depending on your budget, space, and priorities, a wireless surround system could be just the ticket to make your movie nights a little more immersive. The traditional surround-sound specification calls for five full-range speakers: one center channel, left and right up front, plus left and right speakers mounted on either side of your listening area. Whether branded Dolby, DTS, or something else, this is a 5.

While the singular Sonos and Sony bars (the S brands?) let you add speakers as you go, the Cinema is a complete surround sound system.

We take a look at the A sound bar from Sony in our latest home theater review. KLH Audio makes waves with the new Model 5. A throwback speaker we think is among the best loudspeakers under Andrew Robinson reviews hifi, home theater and tech on YouTube.

When you want a simple and practical upgrade of the TV sound, the choice often falls on a soundboard. Unfortunately, even the best soundbars have a rather monotonous and flat sound image compared to a traditional stereo system — especially when it comes to music. Modern audio formats and DSP technology do not quite mask the fact that almost all the sound comes straight from the front. If you are among those who see the benefit of a soundbar, but do not want the compromises one clearly entails, then Sony may have exactly what you are looking for, with the HT-A9 speaker system. This consists of four wireless speakers, which communicate with a small, digital central unit that connects to the network, and to the TV with HDMI. In addition to having drivers in the front, the speakers also have top-mounted drives, directed towards the ceiling.

The Sonos Sub provides an instant upgrade to your Sonos Play speaker system, but it's quite pricey. For surround seekers who prioritize ease of setup, Klipsch's wireless 5. If you're looking for a small subwoofer, the Artison RCC Nano 1 is about as tiny as you can get at only 9 inches across. Flexible configuration, a full list of features, and solid bass performance give the Polk Audio DSW Pro a leg up on similar-size subwoofers. Klipsch's Synergy Sub is powerful and musical, and that's not something you always find in midpriced subwoofers. The Amazon Echo Sub offers an instant bass upgrade to the Echo line of smart speakers, but stereo pairing two Echos makes for a better music experience. If you don't mind its uninspired aesthetics, the Definitive Technology ProSub is a mighty little subwoofer and a fine match for its SSA soundbars and ProCinema satellite speakers.
