LOG IN. I've upgraded to the Boston Audio mat, it's quite a big improvement over the stock rubber mat. I thought the stock rubber mat sounded very loose and ripe in the bass. The mids and highs were drowned out by the loose bass.

Technics 1200 tonearm upgrade

Technics tonearm upgrade In addition, everything is free, you just need to make an account and participate in the competition. In the end, I'll just say that Bettingexpert is the best site in the world. Technics have had unprecedented success with the SL range of turntables that started life in These direct drive models originally intended as hi-fi devices, were adopted by the DJ community following the launch of the high torque motor and Quartz lock mechanism with the Mk2 in Approximately 3 million turntables were made until they were discontinued in More recently the high end G audiophile model heralded a return to production and a relaunch of the Technics brand in This was followed by a lower cost GR model the following year.

In the c starter turntable, and a new DJ-specific mk7 model, were launched. All of these models have huge potential for upgrades, as have several related Technics models. The Technics direct drive motor is an industry standard reliable unit that keeps very accurate speed. Major gains in performance can be achieved by upgrading suspension and arm.

The Bo! Note that in the picture below the Bo! DJs have found that the new lighter weight Mk7 is even more susceptible to vibration from acoustic feedback — not ideal in clubs! These absorb energy and turn it into heat, significantly reducing the back reflection from the platter to the stylus, and thus reducing distortion.

This results in a more 3D soundstage and better delineation between notes. All of the series have adjustable vertical tracking angle VTA — via the knurled ring under the tonearm, enabling the higher performance 5mm Achromat to be used. This applies to models with a mark number e. The turntables, deserve better arms. The Funk Firm now offers a significant upgrade on these arms. This is an upgrade service that changes the weak point of the Technics arm, the resonant S-shaped tube and replaces it with the Carbon Fibre Cross Beam FX tube, upgrading wiring at the same time and of course necessitating a new cranked head shell designed for straight arms.

To purchase this the customer returns the arm to Funk, who then can significantly upgrade the performance with modifications that keep most of the iconic look and ease of use such as VTA adjustment, of the classic This arm outperforms all of the traditional much more expensive replacements such as the SME and the Rega Arms.

If upgrading a modern Technics such as the G, GR, Mk7, the phono plugs are retained at the rear of the deck. If upgrading an older arm with captive leads, these are also retained. It replaces the whole arm assembly and has captive leads that run straight to the amplifier.

Inspired by other threads asking about possible upgrades for the well known table, I thought seeing is believing aka it can be done. Please note if the pics are of your personal table and the particular upgrades you are drawing attention tootherwise it will be assumed the pics are from around the web. Can you buy them new?

Location: Syracuse NY. They were discontinued in but you can usually pick up a nice used one for around dollars or on eBay for say AcidPunk15 and Licorice pizza like this. I've heard one with an origin live arm. Total mod cost into it was close to bucks, with power supply and bearing. I thought it was a substantial improvement. Used costs of the table are kinda getting out of hand making a nice example close to 2k without a cartridge.

That being said I do wish Panasonic weren't a bunch of a holes and would bring it back. For dollars that table was epic. Last edited: Dec 29, Licorice pizza and 56GoldTop like this.

As posted in another thread: Stock bearing: Mike New Audio bearing I've been using one for several years now. Very much so. Also, if you haven't yet installed it, the bearing easily doubles as home defense weaponry. I believe Applied Fidelity will modify stock bearings, as well. Location: Fort St. The upgrade is a complete reassessment of every mechanical motor component and brings the motors performance up to what the designer intended, not what the accountant delivered.

Every part of the motor is optimized to do its task as intended. The difference between as designed and as built is significant. The bearing and spindle are cleaned and re oiled.

Superior transients and decay along with a wider sense of drive and power. Low frequency extension is enhanced, this adds gestalt to the performance which is very appealing. It also opens the door on full range systems to low frequency information previously hidden.

What can be harvested off a LP never ceases to impress us. Isn't this one of the reasons we still use this exciting medium? This is a fundamental improvement to the front end source component of your system. Changes here are dramatic.

Owners who have had both Mk2 and Mk3 motors upgraded, report that the gap between the two is reduced. This is a big plus, as the Mk3 is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Components of the motor worked on and optimised are: the motor stator chassis, the bearing support, the stator, commutation and speed sensing. Part of the upgrade involves the application of an organic oil to specific parts of the chassis and motor. This same oil is used by other highly rated audio component manufacturers.

Over time the oil dries and stabilises, displaying considerable longevity. This explains the time delay before optimum performance. Initial proof testing of this oil was done in an electrostatic speaker HT supply in Under these conditions the oil is exposed to Vdc and 50 hz, Vac V P-Pto date it has shown absolutely no degradation. The oil was first used inside a test MK3 motor in. This TT has been run virtually daily since then, again there is absolutely no degradation.

Inside the motor the oil is exposed to a very benign low frequency 30VP-P sine wave on start up, dropping to a much lower voltage at run speeds. Temperature rise inside the motor is minimal. The work is delicate and time consuming.

Definitely not of the faint hearted. It has taken us 15 years of small and sometimes large changes to get to this point. Many times we went backwards and had to rework what we had just done. We must have had the motors apart literally 's of times. Due to the nature of some of the materials employed, the full benefit of the upgrade is not immediately apparent. That said, customers are typically delighted with the out of the box performance.

Full benefits become apparent after approximately 3 to 4 months. The fundamental principles of the upgrade are transferable to other makes. We can advise on your particular model. Should you decide to go ahead with another make of TT, the unit would need to be sent to our New Zealand operation for the procedure. This policy may change in the future. Yet another "best" tonearm for my technics sl Discussion in ' Turntables ' started by murphythecatJun 11, Messages: Hi, I finally decided to get a technics sl on ebay and upgrade it as my first table.

First thing I need seem to do is replace the bad and cheap tonearm of the sl What do you guys suggest? Would it even be worth it to put so much on a tonearm? I also plan on getting a good cartridge, so maybe suggest a tonearm that allow a lot of cartridge fit? Messages: 6, Location: london, uk. Messages: 5, Location: Stockholm by night. Messages: 3, Location: Montreal, Canada.

I would put my money on a cartridge or upgrading the stock arm. Messages: 3, Location: from buffalo, ny and now live in santa clarita. Jon D likes this. Get a KAB Damper and rewire it and be amazed at the improvements you get. Messages: 29, Location: Boston Area, Massachusetts. There's a few threads including a few I've done discussing modding the 's stock arm we are talking about the MK2, correct? I will get the kab damper for sure and try a couple of mods some of you have suggested.

Just one question, how much then I should put on a arm to really step up to a new game? Also, How much should I put toward a cartridge then?

This very affordable mat will take your vinyl playback to a whole new higher level. My perception was that the Achromat provided greater focus to elements in the music, a quieter background as well as greater separation and air. Music had improved pace, with bass considerably more taught and tuneful. Cymbals gained a crisper and more metallic nature. The proof is in the pudding.

Aeroplane mein kaun si gas bhari jati hai In our technology column last month we shared the 8 best turntables for home listening. The problem with Hi-Fi and turntables especially is that they are machines. Like any machine, they can be tweaked and tuned to improve performance. In addition, they can also be affected by the actions of outside forces in a positive and negative manner. To give you one example, you can buy yourself a five-star rated turntable for lots of money, take it home, put it on your coffee table, hook it up to your amp and speakers, spin your favourite record and wonder what the fuss was all about. Suddenly, your expensive, well received turntable sounds like a blancmange.

Achromat 1200 - Turntable Mat for Technics SL-1200 Turntables

Vinyl records haven been rendered commercially dead several times: first by the compact cassette, then the CD, and finally by the advent of digital downloads. This has caused many a lazy journalist to declare a vinyl revival whenever the buying sprees of wannabe DJs and hipsters gently spike the sales figures. Yes, vinyl records don't sell in anything like the numbers they did in their heyday, but they never went away either, especially for the hardcore collectors and audiophiles that prize the presentation—the packaging and sonic performance respectively—that only records can provide. That's not to mention that there's a lot of music available on vinyl, much of which may never be available in any other format. Another recent uptick in vinyl record sales means there are a lot of new turntables appearing at the more affordable end of the market, all the way from cheap and cheerful and best avoided suitcase-style affairs from Crossley, through to bamboo-coated curios like the "Stir it Up" from House of Marley. But Pioneer is also marketing the PLX for home hi-fi use, an area where direct-drive DJ decks where the spinning platter is attached directly to the motor have traditionally been sidelined in favour of fussier belt-driven turntables where the platter is driven by a rubber belt attached to the motor. At first glance, maybe glimpsed in a darkened club, the PLX could easily be mistaken for a classic Technics turntable.

Transforms the Technics turntable and removes the ringing platter that degrades the sound. Had good results with this and now very rare. Also may have a MN bearing for sale in a couple of weeks if my plans go to plan. Technics SL MK2 fully rebuilt and repainted.

A very impressive upgrade on metal platters, this mat has some benefits on plastic platters, though some may prefer the bass without it. The Funk Firm arose from the ashes of Pink Triangle, the late lamented purveyor of turntables designed to be as near non-resonant as possible, and the Achromat turntable mat is their attempt at reducing resonance.
