Waveguide loudspeaker

The exponential enlargement provides a high sound pressure level gain in the lower high frequency range, which discharges the tweeter. In addition, the focus and the coupling to a woofer are improved, because the sound generation planes move closer together. For fixation of the tweeter on the waveguide 4 pieces M4 screws length approx. Thereby for example the session information or language setting are stored on your computer. What these waveguides do is solve the age-old problem that all conventional high frequency drive units have with the beaming high frequency content in an ever increasingly narrow coverage angle. This means that you can only hear full frequency content if you are directly in front of the speaker or nearly so. This problem is particularly acute in loudspeakers for cinema use. In cinema sound we need to provide as consistent an experience as possible to all seats.

In larger rooms especially, many of those seats can be significantly off-axis to one or more speakers. People in those seats miss out on some of the high frequency content. But it gets worse. Speakers radiate sound in all directions. What about the sound energy that goes from the speakers and bounces off the walls, floor and ceiling before getting to the listener?

Turns out those reflections are really important to the human auditory system. All too often, BOTH of these problems exist, and yeah, it gets worse…. In cinema sound, we have requirements for higher sound pressure levels SPL than in most normal music listening environments. Movie sound tracks can have extreme dynamic range. In rooms that are larger or where the client has a desire for particularly high SPL, loudspeakers can get put under extreme stress.

To cope with this, speakers designed for cinema use are designed to be more robust. At higher frequencies, horns are used to increase efficiency. They accomplish high SPL in part by—you guessed it—beaming energy even more narrowly! This is what you have to do if you have to play loudly. It gets even worse, though. At lower frequencies, to meet the requirement for high SPL, special drivers are used for the woofer and midrange.

Also, midrange drivers for cinema are frequently over sized for robustness. This brings the beaming problem down even lower in frequency — to the vocal range.

The Conic Section Array waveguide delivers constant horizontal directivity over a degree coverage angle. Even at extreme off axis angles of 70 or 80 degrees, there is no roll-off of high frequencies.

As you move off axis, the behavior of a speaker with a CSA is that the overall level is somewhat attenuated, about 6dB at 80 degrees yet the shape of the frequency response curve remains quite flat.

Outfitted with a high quality compression driver, we are able to bring a level of performance that even well designed audiophile loudspeakers cannot attain, but at sound pressure levels no audiophile speaker could ever achieve. Alavi, Hessam Acoustics of high performance transmission-line loudspeakers. Acoustically treated, lined ducts are used in a wide range of applications, one of which is a transmission-line loudspeaker TLL , which consists of a long, acoustically-lined, folded duct attached to the rear of the loudspeaker driver. Consequently, knowledge and understanding of sound propagation within acoustically treated ducts is essential in order to be able to create and analyse designs for the intended applications. The lowfrequency driver of a loudspeaker creates pressure fluctuations on both sides of the diaphragm. Therefore, a loudspeaker cabinet of some sort is required to control the sound radiation from the rear of the driver and to prevent the unwanted interference of those sounds with that radiated from the front of the loudspeaker. The transmission-line loudspeakers are however, designed and optimized to control this rear driver radiations by redirecting the pressure at the back of the driver and use them to extend the overall low-frequency response of the loudspeaker system. Transmission-line loudspeakers rely on the use of sound absorbing materials and, although attempts at modelling the performance of these have been reported in the literature, most transmission-line loudspeakers are designed empirically, using a combination of experience and trial-and-error.

In the realm of Hi-Fi speakers, good sound often comes down to the details. Phase plugs and waveguides are two construction methods that have been developed to get the most out of sound transducers. These devices influence the dispersion behaviour and the sound reflections. The aim — as so often in loudspeaker construction — is to produce the cleanest possible sound with a linear frequency response. Phase plugs are placed in the middle of the transducer diaphragm instead of dust caps.

Modification of waveguide Measurements. I have a box of Monacor waveguides cut to various depths for a quick test on tweeters to pick those suitable for applying a waveguide. Just throwing in a waveguide on a tweeter mostly doesn't work. Some tweeters may require a shallow waveguide, some tweeters a deep one. The initial part of the waveguide, the throat, is critical in the way the tweeter couples to the air and loads the "horn". There's no clear distinction between a horn and a waveguide but if a waveguide is deeper than mm, I would start thinking of it as a horn. With the TW tweeter a very shallow waveguide was possible and counts for its lack of any "horny" sound.

AC is a compact 2-way full-range loudspeaker system comprised of one mm (10 in) low frequency driver and one 25 mm (1 in) exit/35 mm ( in).
