So, has anyone here had experience with both? It looks like JVC made some very good equipment in the 80s and 90s. Always fancied trying one again Nice bit of useless information for you. Thanks guys. The SD1 was a boutique component, copper plated chassis and class a from memory. Should sound a hell of a lot better than the , but they fetch big money. I don't think you can modify the transformer in those North American s.
You'd just need a step-down transformer. I use one to run a US-spec tuner and it works fine. It looks like the SD1 was very rare as the old thread that I linked to has the most info from actual users that I've been able to find. Hi - are you saying that you run US spec equipment on a 50hz supply? Isn't that meant to blow the equipment up after a while? I heard conflicting reports about how safe it is.
Do the frequency steps match the UK frequencies ok? I had a Nakamichi car radio once, and it was US spec and would only tune to Radio 2!!! I wouldn't get too hung up on it being JVC or having to be that exact model Dozens of similar amplifiers were produced by nearly all Japanese manufacturers at the time.
It pains me to say it but most of the internal DAC's are quite poor when compared to modern types, the phono stages are usually best described as "functional" and the sound described as "safe". I'm not hating on Jap amps, in fact i'm a long term fan of them but its easy to get carried away and lose sight of what they are: decent sounding budget amps.
If the car radio could only tune to Radio 2 then it was very likely Japanese spec, not US spec. I'm sure he would but my last post wasn't directed at solely the JVC.
As I've said before, those who are waxing lyrical about it don't appear to have much wider experience of different amps Not saying they cant spot a good one but after 10 years of chronic box swapping you do start to see things a little differently. Well it'll be interesting to see how the fares at the bake-off in the summer.
I look forward to reading about that. I actually bought a full JVC stack last year from a dealer in Belgium who had a very well cared for used set - the amp, CD player and the tuner. Its fantastic! This one is a "can do everything". Not good, but perfect. Beside the excellent input stage including a good sounding Phono input, this amplifier features optical and coaxial in and outs. It will be delivered with the original remote normal wear and the original manual from non smoking original owners. Tuner and Cassette deck available as well.
