Mice squeak we speak
Two different groups of scientists are looking at the way mice talk to each other, but they are doing this in very different ways. Both sets of scientists are learning amazing new information about mice. Mice are one of the animals that scientists most often study. Because mice and humans are similar in many ways, studying mice can often tell us things about humans. But one of the problems in studying the sounds that mice make is trying to hear the mice in the first place.

Mice squeak, we speak
Guess what. Cats have gaze-driven communication, and in contrast to their reputation, may seek help when necessary. Many domestic dogs can wiggle their eyebrows and make themselves look insanely appealing. Then we adopt them and give them treats. The results, published in the journal Animal Cognition, fly in the face of their image as egomaniacs who are unaware of us except as feeding machines that are conveniently warm-lapped in winter. Indeed it is not so, at least not exactly.
Mice Squeak, We Speak ( I Speak, I Say, I Talk )
The simple rhyming text begs to be read aloud, and children will pick up the rhythm and shout out the sounds -- baas, roars, howls and hoots -- as they go from page to page, over and over again. Tomie dePaola's charming folk-art style brilliantly captures each animal in its surroundings, set against a border of striking color and design. A perfect first book for sharing with the young. It's a very simple book that gives descriptions about the sounds that certain animals make. It could possible be used in lower grades during a science lesson on animals, but could not be the only source. This poem comes to life with dePaola's beautiful illustrations. I loved the bright colors, and I know it will attract the student's attention.
