A welcome speech is necessary as this is a way of welcoming people who attended the ceremony. This is also a way of introducing the speaker, the agenda and the people in charge of the event. Without all this, the listeners or the audience would feel lost.
Think of a welcome speech as a guide for the people who are attending the event. Most events like wedding receptions , lectures, awards ceremonies, and church events often use welcome speeches before starting the actual event. You may also add a thank you speech alongside your welcome speech. As it is usually mixed or closed together.
While a thank you speech is to simply show your gratitude towards them for attending the event.

I really enjoyed all of our guest speakers coming in and talking to us about their experiences in and out of the classroom. There were some points that I felt were custom tailored to my concerns about teaching and my unanswered questions as well. What the classroom teachers had to say about teaching was really encouraging. It was so much fun to see them all go back and forth with conversation as well as see the joy in their faces when they talked about their students.

Predictive modeling in social networks. Image courtesy of Wikipedia under creative commons license click on image to enlarge. The talk explains some methods of modeling and production for complex systems based on the idea of structural adaptation. The unknown structure of the underlying model is recovered from the data and used for its estimation, modeling, and prediction. The methods are illustrated by several applications: medical fMRI imaging, pharmacokinetics, DNA analysis, clustering and classification, cognitive studies, pricing of American options, among others. Without the understanding the functioning of the visual system, advanced by Helmholz more than a century ago, we would not have had visual display and all related achievements, such as virtual reality helmets. No similar breakthrough happened in tactile perception: our understanding of the ways it works did not change much since Aristotle. In my talk I will discuss the problem of tactile information processing at several levels: skin biomechanics, neural processing, and perception.

Are you about to plan or organize an event or a conference and you are wondering what kind of speaker you should invite? Choosing a speaker is probably not the first thing you decide on when you are planning a conference or event. All your speakers should align with the topic, format, and purpose of your event. Small gatherings might prefer a specialist, who is well known in his industry, whereas more significant events also require a big name that attracts attendees.

A good oral presentation is well structured; this makes it easier for the listener to follow. Basically there are three parts to a typical presentation: the beginning, middle and end or introduction, body and conclusion. We are going to look at the content of each part individually and the language needed to express its structure and content. The beginning of a presentation is the most important part. It is when you establish a rapport with the audience and when you have its attention.

Whether you are holding the meeting or attending the meeting it is polite to make small talk while you wait for the meeting to start. You should discuss things unrelated to the meeting, such as weather, family, or weekend plans. Once everyone has arrived, the chairperson, or whoever is in charge of the meeting should formally welcome everyone to the meeting and thank the attendees for coming.
