As soon as Jessica Baumgartner signed up to participate in a national speech competition, she knew what she wanted to say. The Grade 11 student at Stoughton Central School had too many people close to her impacted by sexual assault to turn down the opportunity to spread a message on the importance of consent to such a large audience. In past years it has been held in-person featuring only students from Ontario. This year, the competition was held virtually and expanded to include students from across Canada. Out of the more than entrants across two categories — Grades 6 to 8 and Grades 9 to 12 — Baumgartner placed third in the older category. While she was thrilled with her success, she was more excited knowing that hundreds of people across the country had heard her message about the importance of consent. Baumgartner hopes consent becomes a more regular topic in classrooms in schools across the country, helping educate students about its significance and the impact of sexual assault.
