There's something strange about Gears of War 2. By any measure, the game is great. The sequel improves upon the first game in virtually every possible way. And yet, for whatever reason, neither myself nor the other journalists I talked to at X'08 in Toronto yesterday seemed all that enthused about Microsoft's marquee title for the impending holiday season.
Everyone loved the game, but no one walked away floored by the experience. To be fair, that may have been a result of the relatively limited demo that was on show at the event. The Gears of War 2 lounge on the third floor of CiRCA night club had ten big-screen LCD TVs with matching Xbox units for a local multiplayer showdown, but, for all the glitz and glamor, only a handful of maps were available to play on with the single game play mode: Assassination.
An old mode from the original game, Assassination pits both teams against each other in a battle to the death.
One player on each side is dubbed the team leader and killing the team leader prevents his team from respawning, so it's an all-out-war to kill the leaders before whipping out the rest of the team.
The new maps on display exhibited what I've come to refer to as the "Gridlock or Subway" strategy. In the original game, there were two kinds of maps: "Gridlocks" and " Subways ," or symmetrical and uneven maps. All of the new maps on display were Gridlocks: symmetrical maps where both sides of the field are the same. One particular map I played on had an interesting random element to it, as a giant avalanche would pour through the middle of the level, killing anything in its path.
More than once during my time with the game the entire floor erupted with yells as half the players and occasionally the team leader were wiped out. While the visual presentation looks more or less the same as the original—at least in the build I played—the increased animation count is immediately noticeable. The COGs and Locust characters have a slew of new animations. The new chainsaw animations that pop up when you come up behind an enemy are by all accounts much more vicious than the original animations.
Additionally, the race and weapon specific executions are great: the torque bow one, a taut-string decapitation, is especially gruesome. Picking up player bodies to use as human shields also proved to be a great addition. This new tactic creates some unexpected opportunities, as it essentially gives you a free shield whenever you use it. More than once I was able to avoid getting caught with a chainsaw by grabbing a body at the last second.
You'll only have access to your sidearm when you're holding a body, but having movable cover is something that's going to really change things up. For Gears veterans, fighting old tendencies will likely be the only thing that holds them back. More than once I found myself fighting now-natural inclinations such as executing downed enemies immediately rather than picking them up, not shooting at players in a chainsaw animation that used to be invincible but aren't any longer, and trying to tag enemies with sticky grenades from generous distances.
With nothing but improvements to what was already an incredible game, there's little question that Gears of War 2 is going to do huge business this holiday season. While it may not be the most new and exciting release on the horizon, there's no question that Gears 2 is a worthy successor and will likely eat up our time, as well as yours, for quite a while.

Channels gone black on Why can t you split a satellite signal cable. The newer boxes connect the second tuner automatically and internally if only a single cable is found on setup. If you later add a second the Foxsat-HDR requires a factory reset to detect the extra cable, the newer boxes will detect the cable just by doing a freesat tune.
