Differential Amplifier Circuit Tutorial using BJT and Opamp

Post a Comment. Differential Amplifier. Differential amplifier is a basic circuit applied in lot of integrated linear and other types of amplifiers. In general, this circuit configuration is structure of transistors directly connected with their emitters in case of bipolar junction transistors or sources in case of junction FET transistors. The differential amplifier has a big amplification of the difference of the signals leaded to its inputs differential amplification Ad and a relatively small amplification of the average value of these signals synphase amplification or amplification of the common signal Acm. This circuit is also used and for amplifying of DC signals. The upper limit of its working frequency range is in the order of several MHz.

If your circuit cannot achieve convergence using this model, use the OpAmpIdeal linear model. The relationship between input and output voltages.

5 Steps to Design a Differential Amplifier

The differential amplifier is one of the important circuits in analog systems and circuit designs. It is an electronic amplifier that has two inputs and amplifies the voltage difference between those inputs. Among these, the commonly used differential amplifier is the amplifier made using Op-Amps because they are suitably configured to result in a much practical differential amplifier. In the differential amplifier made using BJTs, input signals V1 and V2 are applied to the base terminal of the transistors and the outputs are collected from the collector terminal of the transistors. Considering the differential amplifier built using BJTs, if the input voltage V1 at transistor Q1 is sinusoidal, then as V1 goes on increasing, the transistor Q1 starts conduction which results in a large collector current in Q1 increasing the voltage drop across Rc1, causing a decrease in output voltage V Due to the same effect, even IE1 increases which increases the common emitter current IE1 resulting in an increase of voltage drop across emitter resistor RE. Therefore, this shows that the emitter terminals of two transistors Q1 and Q2 are moving to the positive that in turn indicates a more negative base terminal at the transistor Q2.

An electronic circuit that is designed to amplify the difference between two voltages measured with respect to a common reference, usually designated as ground. By convention, the net difference of two voltages measured with respect to a common reference is called the differential-mode voltage, while the sum of the voltages, usually divided by two to give an average value, is called the common-mode voltage.

A new methodology based on the concept of figure of merit under area constraints is described for designing optimum performance differential amplifiers. First a figure of merit is introduced that includes the three performance parameters, namely, input-referred noise, differential dc gain, and unity-gain bandwidth. Expressions for these parameters have been derived analytically and finally arrived at an expression for the figure of merit. Next it is shown how these performance parameters vary with the relative allocation of the total available area between the input and load transistors. The peak value of figure of merit is a function of area. However, it is independent of biasing current and, therefore, power consumption subject to the minimum current and, therefore, a minimum power required to keep all the transistors biased in the saturation region.

In a practise exam question I am given a circuit of a BJT differential amplifier and told to show that these equations are true:. I know how to replace the transistors with the hybrid-pi model, but am not sure how to analyse the circuit from there.

In this post, differential amplifier using BJT and differential amplifier using op-amps are explained in detail.

In general, the input stage of any analog integrated circuit with more than one input consists of a differential pair or differential amplifier. The basic differential pair circuit consists of two-matched transistors Q1 and Q 2 , whose emitters are joined together and biased a constant current source I as shown in Figure 1.
