TED is an organization devoted to spreading ideas through short talks from experts in a variety of fields. These talks get posted on YouTube, and then the videos make the rounds through your Facebook and Twitter feeds ad infinitum. The topics are always bold, a little weird, and ultimately an opportunity for the person to be concisely profound on his or her pet topic of interest. Taken as a whole, these videos make me feel like we are either so close to a grand utopia or a robot uprising. Such people end up as street performers, spoken word artists, and junior members of City Council. I had a sneaking suspicious this might be my TEDx year.

Marcia L. Allert joined The Dallas Morning News as Director of Visual Journalism in and oversees a team of award-winning visual journalists and editors. Aaron Turner is a photographer and educator currently based in Arkansas where he founded the Center for Photographers of Color at the University of Arkansas, School of Art.
He uses photography to pursue personal stories of people of color, in two main areas of the U. Aaron also uses the view camera to create still life studies on the topics of race, history, blackness as material, and the role of the black artist.
Aaron received his M. Rokko International Photography Festival Japan , she interprets and presents on contemporary lens-based practice as a portfolio reviewer, serves on judging panels, and is a nominator for photographic awards.
Laura also serves on the Board of Directors for the Blue Earth Alliance, providing fiscal sponsorship for photographers and filmmakers. Mia Diehl is the director of photography for Fortune. Before joining Fortune in , she served as photo editor at the New Yorker and features photo editor at Vogue.
Kainaz Amaria runs an interdisciplinary team specializing in graphics, interactives, photography, data and design. She also reports on visual ethics and photojournalism. Before all the desk jobs, she was a freelance photojournalist based in Mumbai, India. Prior to that, she worked for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida. She hates sloths, but loves pizza and puns. Owsley was a photojournalist and photo editor for the project. Owsley has been in the industry for 26 years. Owsley is a single mother with one daughter who is a senior in college.
Sarah Gilbert is features picture editor for the Guardian with over 20 years experience as an editor. Previous roles have included work for book and magazine publishers, a picture editor at Conde Nast, and several years in the US as the Guardian's Photo Editor.
She has been a juror on a number of leading photography competitions, conducts portfolio reviews at international photo festivals, and is a mentor on the Women Photograph programme. Her specific areas of interest include documentary and long-form photography, and she commissions portraits around the world and loves to encourage new talent. He also collaborates with photographers, supporting them in their ongoing projects by way of research and curatorial conceptualizations.
Occasionally, he mentors workshops in the field of creative authorship and the development of art- and documentary projects. Diane Allford is a multifaceted photographer, multimedia artist, and visual content creator working in New York City. After many years on the publishing side she now brings her own photography to the forefront. Diane has always been fascinated with the photographic image being used as an illustration tool for stories.
Her own work concentrates on the everyday life of black and brown people. She has experience in museums, galleries, and arts institutions for over twenty years. She is currently producing a series on Instagram Live, called"Creative Conversations".
These are casual conversations highlighting the artistic practice of artists, creatives and arts professionals within the African Diaspora. She is also curator of "The South Got Something to Say" an outdoor digital exhibition in Atlanta, celebrating artists who contribute to Atlanta's visual culture.
Featuring digital works by 10 Atlanta based artists across 4 digital screens. He now runs his own photography consultancy based in London, working with commercial clients, broadcasters and photographers to maximise the impact of their imagery. In he judged for the Communication Arts photography competition in the US, and most recently he judged a global competition for the Dawoodi Bohras. Patricia Karallis works as a freelance photographer in Melbourne, with clients including Brownbook, Metal Magazine, Freunde von Freunden, and more.
She is also Founding Editor in Chief of print and online magazine and small-print publisher Paper Journal. His photography has been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, The Photographic Journal, American Photography 36, and on various album covers.
Giangiacomo Cirla is an artistic director, project manager, and researcher. He works in the field of visual culture and communication and his research focuses on the study of fruition, perception, production and communication of artistic projects with a focus on the analysis of dynamics and communicative-linguistic strategies developed within the emancipation of digital languages.
Joshua lives in Dummerston, VT with his partner and two dogs. Laylah Amatullah Barrayn is a documentary photographer working in the medium for 20 years.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a member of Kamoinge, a pioneering collective of African American photographers founded in and a brand ambassador for FujiFilm. Barrayn is currently working on a book on contemporary Black photographers. She resides in the Marin County city of Novato with her husband, two children, two cats and Trout the dog. Since she launched the digital platform in , Feature Shoot has published articles and interviews with more than 5, photographers.
Zavos also founded The Print Swap, a photo-sharing project connecting image-makers from countries around the globe. The Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Awards, launched by Zavos in , has helped boost the careers of many notable photographers.
She is based in Sydney, Australia. Russell Frederick is a Brooklyn-born self taught photographer of Panamanian heritage who has been photographing almost twenty-five years. He is best known for his photographs of the African diaspora of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, a project he began in Russell is a proud member of Kamoinge Inc.
She joined the gallery after graduating from the University of Amsterdam in Lieve manages the photography department, representing an international and widely recognized roster of artists. The department curates an average of six exhibitions a year and is recognized for their engagement with important socio-cultural, political and environmental themes.
Danielle A. Scruggs is a photographer, photo editor, and writer living in Chicago, Illinois. Danielle is the founder and editor of Black Women Directors, a digital library highlighting the work of Black women and non-binary filmmakers throughout the Diaspora.
She has exhibited her personal work across the United States. Most recently, she was a news photo editor at Vox. Danielle is a board member of Authority Collective , a general member of Diversify.
Photo and was a Women Photograph mentor, all groups committed to creating equity and parity within the visual storytelling field. Maura Friedman is an associate photo editor at National Geographic. On the travel desk, Maura works with photographers on stories at the intersection of history, environment, and place.
Before moving into photo editing, Maura produced photo and video stories across the Southeast United States. She also serves on the leadership team for Women Photojournalists of Washington.
Lauri Lyons is a Jamaican- American author, photographer, and journalist. For over 20 years Lauri's work has explored the influence of American culture and the African Diaspora, within a global framework. Lyons is the Founding Executive Director of the Rest With Honor not-for-profit organization that merges communities, technology, and culture for the purpose of social justice and cultural preservation.

The event will expand from its previous one-day format on a Saturday to two days of sessions on a Friday evening and a Saturday. On Nov. Organizers said speakers at the TEDxSMU: After Dark event will include Chris Garcia, an artist and engineer who creates Evolinea clocks; David Hopkins, who writes essays, short stories, and graphic novels; and Justin Terveen, a photographer who specializes in images of architecture and the urban aesthetic. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events aimed at bringing people together to share a TED-like experience. The events usually are in the form of talks of 18 minutes or less.

For the tenth anniversary of TEDxSMU, Paperlyte provided the multi-camera broadcast production services and created some original high-concept videos and graphic in the theme of the event. The high concept videos included an introduction video to kick off the event and three high end interstitial videos to divide the sections. Extra content was filmed to brand each speaker section with unique title slates before they walked out on stage. The concept for our pre-produced content was to follow the trajectory of matter from solid to liquid to gas, as it relates to the past present and future. To design this sequence we sourced an ice sculptor in Fort Worth, Texas and scouted his studio while learning about his process. He carved the X from the logo as we watched it being formed in a solid block and then begin to melt away. Macro-photography paired with trial and error gave way to images aligning with the both the theme of the event and the subtext of time. Inspiration from the concept sparked the choreography from Belinda Richardson of Preston Hollow Dance. Her movements were trailed by smoke and emphasized in the industrial warehouse and strong backlighting. I hung up the phone, feeling both ecstatic and terrified. It was the end of June and the event was at the end of October. I had 4 months to figure out my talk while finishing up the interviews for my book and still do client work, be the default parent, take care of the household duties, try to maintain a relationship with my husband, all in less than 20 hours per week for the summer months. The next few months flew by. I hired a friend to coach me, helping me find the right words and the right presence on the stage. And I practiced a lot.
