The House of Commons conducts its business in its own unique physical setting and under administrative structures of its own making. These two factors are an important backdrop to the operations of the House. This article provides information about the Parliament Buildings, the House of Commons Chamber and the committee rooms. The maiden session of the country's new parliament starts today with the opposition Awami League keeping away. The main opposition has already said it will not join the maiden session of the eighth parliament.

The Awami League dubbed the October 1 election as "heavily rigged and manipulated" and will hold a grand rally at Paltan Maidan today to press for cancellation of the election results and a fresh vote. The first task of the House, soon after the new parliament goes into session with Speaker Abdul Hamid in the chair at 10 am, will be to elect a new speaker and deputy speaker. President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed will address the House after the election of the speaker and the deputy speaker.

The House will then be adjourned until November 3 or 4. The new business advisory committee of parliament, to be headed by the speaker, will meet to prepare the schedule of the session. The first session of the House is likely to be of short duration and to be prorogued before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Ruling party sources said no constitutional amendment or any major bill would be placed before the inaugural session of the House.

The bills which are likely to be placed in the current session will include the Election Reform Ordinance. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, told Gulf News that after adjournment for a few days, the process of electing a new president of the country will start.

The minister would not name the presidential candidate, but gave a broad hint that there is no possibility of the incumbent President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, remaining in office.

But President Shahabuddin has already expressed his unwillingness to continue as president, even if any such offer comes to him. The election of the president may take place in the first week of November. The treasury bench will give notice to the speaker about the election and the parliament secretariat will ask the Election Commission to announce the schedule for the election of the president.

Barrister Moudud might also be made deputy leader of the House, ruling party sources said. You can manage them any time by clicking on the notification icon.

Supply December 10th, Speaker, I listened attentively to the remarks of the member from the newly named riding of Hilstrom—Interlake. I am a member from downtown Toronto and not a rural member. I am not fully aware of the complexities surrounding the issue of agriculture and agri-food, but earlier this week I had the privilege of speaking at the Canadian Federation of Agriculture summit. One fact that came out at that summit was the need to debate mobilization and getting more focused on the problems and challenges surrounding rural issues.
