The two long tracks on this EP take shape out of a dark miasma of tone, a swelling, tactile baseline hum that surrounds you like a soft squishy padded room; you feel you could poke at the edges with your finger and feel the boundary of perception give a little. The main difference is that Gemini Twins uses heavily processed vocals as a route to unearthly aura; these cuts rely almost entirely on guitar. As with the Bachman, the real world occasional makes a cameo appearance.
This is not a record you can rush through. On side A, you wait four minutes and 36 seconds for the first unaltered strum, but it is well worth it. The guitar tone is hauntingly clear and lucid, like Hisato Higuchi. With time, it gains weight and friction and dissonance, a rasp of conflict in two overlayered melodic lines.
And then, it pulls in on itself, folding back into a sea of drone, an inchoate tide of tone lapping up around guitar sounds and slowing covering it over. They ring luminously amid smoke banks of soft amorphous hum. In the last third of the piece, a breezy, bucolic guitar enters in, changing the piece entirely and making it more accessible.
Yet even as the flurry of folk-picked melody makes you comfortable, a strange echoing drone brings on a chill. The music is lovely, but not quite what it seems. Copyright Theme adapted from Handsome Code.

About this item
This comprised a number of historical artworks, as well as new pieces developed specially for the space. The symposium included talks and papers from a number of speakers, highlighting the work of scholars exploring expanded media and intersections between art, film and the live event. In and Out of Synch looked at the intersection of sound, light and projection, and particularly the presentation of sound in a visual format. In the film element of the work, Satz played a recorded dialogue, performed by herself and Rhodes, through a 16mm mono and 35mm stereo optical sound camera; these are the machines which print sound tracks, or sound negatives onto film. The cameras projected the visualisation of the audible dialogue into the space as abstract patterns of light. Taking two instances of different technologies which were able to attain the same effect within different mediums, Satz explored the link between light and dark, sound and silence. The works allowed the audience to consider the theoretical arguments from a fresh perspective, and to experience a range of contemporary creative work investigating light and darkness, image and action.
