With wire tracers you must read the manufacturers description. The manufacturer will tell you if the probe is made to pick up signals through walls and all that. The Extech TG20 is a great inexpensive solution to finding wire runs that are exposed in the attic, basement, outside and sometimes the car. It's not made for finding wires through sheetrock or through sheilded wire or through conduit.
