Econowave speakers diy

The ideal speaker for flea power SET tube amp fans would be 1 affordable, 2 easily driven to room-filling levels by two or three watts, and 3 good-sounding. By good-sounding I mean it would be a true full range speaker with reasonably flat response from 40hz to 18khz, with no significant peaks or nulls, powerful high-impact bass, good midrange, and clear treble with no edge or graininess. Pick any two of the above three.

Econowave Speakers

Read times. Has anybody ever heard an econowave speaker? Horizontal and vertical dispersion is excellent, power response is excellent because the horn plays down low enough to match dispersion of a 12" woofer, with minimal beaming, unlike many other horn designs which require multiple horns to cover the bandwidth to avoid beaming.

The crossover is relatively simple 2nd order, based on Wayne Parham design. There are several crossover versions for various tweeters, woofers and horns. The cost to build an economy version of econowave is very low.

There is a deluxe version which interests me with a larger horn and higher quality CD. What intrigues me about this horn geometry versus some other more popular horns in the hifi realm is the almost universal observation by real people who have built them from scratch about how smooth is the treble sound.

Clarity and dynamics are a given with a well designed horn system, but the high frequency harshness common with commercial horn speakers disqualifies them for many people. The guy who conceived and promoted the concept of the Econowave DIY speaker over the last few years, forum name Zilch on AK and PE TechTalk and others, devoted a lot of time to the designs and helping many people build these for themselves. He was dedicated to developing low cost, high quality sound for DIYers based on his knowledge of pro audio parts.

After reading about econowave for a week or so, I came across a horn review on Partsexpress which ended with "RIP Zilch In his eulogy on AK, his close friend said that he and Zilch built speakers every weekend for 3 years.

Zilch posted curves of his experiments and new ideas and answered questions patiently during that time. The information about speaker design, crossover theory, measurement techniques and seller resources is immense treasure for DIY speaker builders in those several econowave threads.

I'm thinking about incorporating the horn and design philosophy into my next speaker build. Any experiences or opinions welcome, thanks Rich. Rich it looks like the deluxe version which uses the QSC i horn solves the vertical dispersion problem the smaller horn has and allows for a 1kHz cross-over which you really need to stay away from the woofers response problems that start at 1. Icould find a link to a graph of the frequency response with the larger horn.

I was thinking it might be a little flatter than the smaller horn. Dumb question, what kind of sensitivity is the Econowave supposed to have? Face Obsessively Audiophilic Posts: I'm looking at this as a baby step toward an all horn system in the future. I've seen those cool horns Mike, super nice! I'd have to hear it first though, as there are a lot of fairy tales in the audiophile horn world. I'm going to hear these Hz tractrix with TAD s pretty soon.

I get the directivity goal that is realized by the Econowave design and that is a very nice response curve but I was hoping for a little more efficiency from a horn design. What frequency is the bass 3dB down point at. Only the HF is horn loaded, so it has to be padded down to match the woofer. There are a lot of different woofers used in various scratch designs and conversions, some of them are not very efficient. So F3 depends on woofer SPL, cab size and alignment. Econowave concept focuses on HF and crossover, and is intended to teach people how to do diy and speaker design, not really a rubber stamp design or kit.

Has anybody heard any econowave horns? I'll buy the parts if you build the speakers? We can share custody where I get visitation rights until you cut them into pieces and build something else? My PE account gets me good pricing on most of these parts I just have no room for more speakers at my place Quote from: richidoo on January 18, , AM.

Thanks for the offer Shane. I'll start a thread in the DIY section after I've settled on my design. I intend to use the QSC horn. They are licensing it from QSC, plus profit it all ads up. I'm glad it's available again. Mike, I think I discovered econowave by reading that review about the 3 way comparo at your place. The early econowaves used a really inexpensive Selenium CD in the smaller 12x6 WG in keeping with the "econo" theme Here's a technical article about the heart of the econowave standard and deluxe, the Progressive Transition horn from JBL.

Rich, I definitely heard the version with the small waveguide and the Selenium Ti tweeter. The Abbeys have the DE and they work pretty darn well. Appreciate the JBL link, most informative. Obsessively Audiophilic Posts: Quote from: mgalusha on January 18, , PM. Quote from: doug s. SMF 2.

These speakers have been seeing daily use in the ZOG lounge-room, are essentially complete, and continue to sound great. But this test chassis was quite noisy. With the woofer enclosures now looking pretty good it was time to tidy up how the compression driver is supported, and tidy away the LPAD and protection circuitry. I stained this the same colour as the speaker boxes, and got some self adhesive 4. This acts as a nice firm bed for the compression driver.

These horns even have published directivity heatmaps although only to The compression drivers installed with 66uF protection caps in series, to stop an inadvertant blast of LF signal frying them. I was disappointed to see on measuring these they had quite a notch in the HF response.. In fact I stopped using the drivers and waited until Col came over with his WooferTester3 setup so we could measure the impedance curve so we could get a handle on wether the units were faulty — but they tested electrically as fine anyway. Also one of the units has a bit more of a HF rolloff than the other.

Waveguides are horns that disperse high-frequency sounds evenly over a wide area, rather than letting them fall off at the sides. Zilch sells PCBs for building this crossover. I tried the conversion myself on some s-era Advent Large speakers. It cost a couple hundred dollars, but the results were outstanding: the modified old Advents performed like thrillingly clear, state-of-the-art speakers that audiophiles pay thousands for.
