Optimization of the 6L6 SE-UL
Super Best Audio Friends. Read these "rules" AND introduce yourself before your first post. A healthy approach to understanding measurements Being true to what the artists intended. I decided on the latter. I dislike reviewing gear that will otherwise never make it into production, but there are several reader curiosity angles here: this amp is one-off from Eddie Current that actually isn't a SET design - it's SE ultralinear; I wanted to analyze the distortion patterns of said ultralinear design; other than servicing existing amps in the field, EC is no more, unless Craig finds the energy and time to resurrect it and offer new designs. The amp started off as a , but getting easily bored, Craig wanted to try something different. He rigged it up to use 6L6 power pentodes wired up for ultralinear operation.

Williamson amplifier
This is a home built 6L6 Single Ended tube amplifier. The output is rated at 10 watts. It was built from a PC board circuit, a toroid power transformer, Edcor SE output transformers and a Hammond chassis and cage. The sound is remarkably good and there is minimal hum and noise at the speakers when you put your ear up the the speaker. The amplifier drives Cerwin Vega E floor speakers. The sensitivity of these speakers is 95dB. The preamplifier is a home built unit with a tube buffer with unity gain that is connected to the power amplifier. I am amazed how good 10 watts of tube amplification sounds.

Anyway, since the amp is for personal use I don't need anything high power. So 20 - 30 watts will do. However the requirement is that the amp overloads nicely. I was thinking about a generic design using a grounded grid splitter and a choice of either 6V6, 6L6 or KT66 outputs. The ability to change the tubes would just to be to experiment with tonal character. However, instead of putting the amp away in a 'box', I though of showcasing it. I always wanted a top cap type tube and thus I was kicking around the idea of perhaps using a tube from the family.
I've been reading about Geo Wright's description of a fairly new power amp to his lineup. I've pasted in his description below. The buyer can choose to have the amp set up optimized either for EL34 or KT He mentions for KT66 substitution, I'm sure that the user can use 6L6 for 20 watts of "classical early hifi sounds".
