When Parker Kingsley was thirteen years old her best friend disappeared without a trace. It's been four years It's been four years since Avery vanished and Parker is fina I don't remember falling asleep on Avery's couch but when I wake up the next morning I'm positivity certain that's where I ended up after our four hour card game marathon the night before.

After the first couple rounds we started getting really competitive - well, as competitive as you can get while playing Snap! I pull myself off the couch and inch down the hall towards the bathroom, my eyes half closed and sore from lack of sleep. I bump head first into something solid and immediately think; How stupid, I've walked into a wall.

I lean forward, rest my cheek against the wall despite the morning cold that should be creeping across it's surface and nearly fall asleep standing up. Then I realize its not cold at all.

And Rhys looks down, his eyebrows raised at me in amusement. I yelp and jump back, fully awake and aware now that I've embarrassed myself for the first time today. I quickly dart past him and disappear into the bathroom before he can say a single word. I move over to the sink where I splash my face with warm water. I look up into the mirror and deflate with disappointment. My reflection isn't even trying to hide the exhaustion I'm feeling.

I flip through Avery's cupboard's looking for her make-up. I find it and when I'm done applying the things I've picked out, I look slightly less like a zombie and more like a human being. I pull my hair into a bun and head for the kitchen. Rhys leans back in his chair in the center of the kitchen and looks me up and down.

I sit down across from him. I shake my head and throw back the last sip of my coffee. I've got to go back to Westershade in about five minutes. A couple nights ago, he'd cleaned the lounge room and told us to ask him if we couldn't find anything. Last night I couldn't find my keys, so here we are. He reaches behind him and into a small wooden bowl on the counter. He pulls out my keys and tosses them to me. That night I'm moving around my room getting ready to meet Avery's friends and attempting to prevent myself from getting nervous.

I take a coat out of my closet and throw it onto my bed. Despite the fact that we're closing in on midsummer, tonight is going to be exceptionally cold. I've chosen to wear a pair of my favorite black jeans and a thick, long sleeved gray jumper. I had gone to see Paul during the day like I said I would and retrieved my schedule. For all of this week I only have two shifts.

Since it's the school holidays, all the younger kid's desperate to earn money for the summer apply for short-term jobs at the diner and most of the time Paul would accept their help. He still tries to give his full-time employees the most hours though. So now that I know I'm free from work tonight there's nothing stopping me from going to meet Avery's friends.

I'm still not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. A human in a room full of Werewolves? Surely that's gonna be a disaster. I'm walking down the upstairs hall towards the bathroom when I spot something on the ground in front of me.

It's a small, barely noticeable blood stain on the dark wood floorboards. I'm surprised I even noticed it. I crouch down and brush my finger over the stain. It must have dropped off me when I came in here to change after what happened in my backyard with Blue a couple weeks ago.

I don't know how something like that could have slipped my mind so easily, but I guess it kind of just got pushed to the bottom of my t hings I need to know list when I discovered Avery was a werewolf. I sigh and stand up, forcing myself to take my eyes off the blood droplet and walk into the bathroom. I lean against the sink and take in a deep breath.

Was it possible that the guy now buried out in the woods was here looking for Avery? A hunter, just like the people that took her parents when she was little?

But that couldn't be right. Both the stranger in my backyard and the stranger at my front door said he'd been there looking for me, not Avery. They had known where I lived, they had known who I was. They'd been there for me. An hour after nightfall, I drop into the backseat of Rhys' car. Sometime during the duration of my preparation period, Avery had texted me and said we'd be taking her brothers car. Considering I have no idea whereabouts in the city we're going, I decided it was probably a better idea for me to go with them than attempting to find the place on my own.

My gaze drifts outside the window, my mind wandering back to the subject of hunters. Now that I'm thinking about it, I can't seem to stop. A storm of thoughts and idea's swirl around the inside of my head, the chaos eventually ordering itself into a single question I can actually ask. Avery swivels in her seat to face me. She studies me for a moment before accepting that as a suitable reason. You're his Deathling, he's never going to let you out of his sight for longer than five minutes.

He shrugs. It's not long before the night glow of the city comes into view ahead of us, and we're driving through the streets of Lochton. Rhys leads us to a small suburb of apartment buildings, then parks on the curb. I step out onto the sidewalk with Avery and look up at the building we've stopped in front of. It's a gray, six story apartment building with three large dark windows on each level.

The front garden is lush with green bushes blooming with pink and red roses. A straight path leads up to a set of stone steps and a small in-cove for the front door. The apartment is nearing the outskirts of the city, just within sight of the tall oaks and pines of the Westershade forest. Above us, a bright crescent moon shines. The three of us walk up the path to the front door and Rhys presses a button.

A second later a mechanical buzzing starts and Rhys pulls open the door, gesturing us inside the lobby. The inside of the apartment building is just as pretty as the outside.

Two closed elevator doors sit on both sides of the room, while a white stone reception desk waits at the end, a vase of assorted pink and red roses on top, most likely picked from outside. A petite, nice looking woman sits behind the desk and briefly looks up from her computer to smile at us. Rhys leads us over to the elevator door on our left and presses the button for floor six.

The penthouse, I'm guessing. He looks slightly ridged in his black jeans and leather jacket, back straight and a slight frown furrowing his brow. I don't know why he's so unsettled by the idea of me meeting his friends, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Avery on the other hand looks bright with excitement. She's smiling and tapping her fingers together, waiting for the elevator doors to open. Maybe she's a little nervous, as well. The doors ding and we step inside the small space. My insides get that strange, weightless feeling when the elevator slides into motion, drawing us towards the top floor. When the doors ding a second time, we step out into a short corridor with a red door waiting at the end.

We walk to it and Rhys rings the doorbell. Beside me, Avery squeezes my hand, giving me a confident and giddy smile. I have exactly four seconds to completely realize what I'm about to step into before the door swings open and a gust of warm air washes over us. In the doorway, a woman who looks only around a couple years older than me greets us with a wide smile. I take in her wavy, dark brown hair and matching eyes, as well as her thin and tall figure, just before she sticks out her hand to me.

So here we are. I finally get to meet Jennifer. She steps back and clasps her hands together in front of her, barely containing a squeal of joy. A horrible image of a room filled with people flashes in my head and panic prickles up and down my spine. I was never happy in crowds, never participated in school talent quests, never was good under pressure. It's just that impossible feeling of responsibility while everyone's watching you that makes me so nervous.

If I can't stand human crowds, how am I going to handle a room filled with Werewolves? Jennifer opens the door for us, waves at Avery and skips down the hallway into her apartment.

Avery had told me before we came that Jennifer had been more than insistent we all use her apartment for this gathering after she had proposed the idea of them meeting her human friend.
