Having been successful with my amplifier I have now decided to take things up a gear and build something even more powerful. The GS35b is a Russian triode that is relatively cheap and easy to get hold of. Originally designed as power triode for UHF Radar applications it has a plate dissipation of about W. Many radio amateurs have used this beast as a power triode in HF linear amplifiers in typical grounded grid configuration. It is similar to the triode in many respects.

It is interesting to note that the data sheet actually calls out a degradation of performance of the tube running on a frequency of 60cm. The data shows that at an anode V of volts and anode I of 0. Then after hours of use it will drop down to watts. Although this is for 60cm and not HF frequencies, does a similar degradation take place on HF?
A Brief History of Linear Amp
Others will probably poo poo this idea but I have found through experience, over many years, that a V Megger is usually able to tell you if a tube is gassy and needs gettering. I have a plastic tub with a blower bolted onto the side. I mount an appropriate filament transformer inside the tub and mount a plastic plate with the appropriate socket for the tube that I'm gettering over a large hole in the base of the tub. I place the lid on the tub and invert it so the socket is on the top. After that, I retest with the Megger and if it is all clear, I put the tube into service. I have done many tubes this way for myself and many other people and have never had a mishap after the 1kV Megger test shows the all clear.
