Victor custom zero turn mower

With your expert help im glad to say that my mower is now up and running Ive got a lawnflite mtd model and when putting the drive into forward the mower moves forward but then the drive gear stick keeps juddering and popping out of gear. I then have to put all my weight onto the gear drive stick to hold it in gear which makes cutting the grass not such a pleasent experiance. The gear drive control has forward top N midle Reverse bottom settings. Without being too technically minded has anyone any advice as to how to solve my problem. Is the slot for the gear shift handle sort of like 2 half circle slots joined to gether, with Forward or drive printed on the left upper side, neutral in the middle, and reverse on the bottom right end.
