George Heinrich carefully positions a 4-foot-diameter hoop net trap in the Alapaha River, just upstream of a massive logjam that we hope is the lair of a lunker turtle. He submerges in the dark water to secure the trap weight around an ancient cypress log, then reappears, river dripping from his beard. We have eight more turtle traps to set. The traps target a specific and magnificent turtle species: the Suwannee alligator snapping turtle. Heinrich has traveled to southern Georgia with hopes of observing an example of this leviathan in the wild as part of the Florida Turtle Conservation Trust's Big Turtle Year. Modeled after big birding year competitions, Heinrich and Timothy Walsh of Connecticut's Bruce Museum are trying to see as many of the United States' 59 turtle species as possible in a single year.
