Magnepan 1.6 qr loudspeakers
The thing about planars is that they have no boxes—just wooden frames, like picture frames, to hold their parts in place. They also have next-to-no drivers. In both the Magneplanar MG12 and its littler brother the MMG, music is made by a quasi-ribbon tweeter and a planar-magnetic woofer—featherweight sheets of Mylar with very thin metal strips or wires attached to their surfaces. Not only do Maggie drivers have very low mass; they also have very large surface areas.

It has been a long while since I posted on here. Anyway, I recently 6 months ago , acquired a beat up pair of Magnepan 1. Straight away I realised how every single pair of cone speakers that I had ever listened to were totally incapable of offering REAL instrument reproduction.
I was totally hooked in big panel speakers I'd call them electrostatics except they are not. I then decided to embark on a pretty hardcore modification programme, in order to see how far I could take these already pretty exceptional speakers.
These mods focused on improving rigidity and the crossover. I have uploaded a series of photos the process which was as follows:. I did the final mods the caps today, and I now have them running continuously in my dedicated listening room. I have set it to a low crossover, so it is very very unobtrusive. The last job is to replace the temporary covers with new ones from and back. I am thinking of going burnt orange, and have bought some mahogany strips to fit down the sides.
Please note that the final photo looks like the speakers are right against the back wall of my listening room. In fact they are over 1.
Interested to see how this turns out. I have a pair of Podium. I'll report back once the caps have bedded in. So far they sound worse than the originals, but I'm not too concerned, I'm sure they will open up.
Have the new caps now bedded in on the 1. A great project that OK, all power to your elbow..!! Excellent work. How did you know which certain caps to use? How did you stumble across these speakers in a rough state etc..? Re the crossover that was pretty easy you just need to match the values, so in this case 22uf on the HF and 25 uf for the LF.
The caps now sound amazing. They probably did immediately but i have to admit that when reconnecting them after the upgrade i had them hooked up wrong, which was why they sounded worse I'm about to move the crossover entirely into an external box, all wired up with solid silver cables, and the inductor will be replaced for Jenzen foil units.
I can then finally wrap with some nice material and add my side mahogany strips, and then that will be it, I can start investing in my amp and or front end parts.
I also intend to make some foil speaker cables which i've read are the best for magnepans. I'll use some more Jenzen foil units, unravelled. I will give a shout out to hificollective for the caps and inductors. I spend too my time looking at caps on there I am always in awe of the work that others seem to manage on units I have no confidence that I coud replicate this sort of work an excellent and thorough job. Will be good to see the final cosmetic changes when you finish them.
I would also echo your comments regarding voices and instruments sound from panel speakers , I recently aquired a pair of QUAD ESL57 and singers and acoustic instruments sound so startingly different without the addition of a cabinet that your first thought is this sounds wrong.
Only when you start to listen more do you realise that this sound is mor lifelike and possibly less impressive and just how much cabinets add to loudspeaker sound.
Great work James, I'm in awe of your skills and experience to carry out the advanced electrical work carried out on the Maggie panels. The 1. I like the look of the Martin Logan's also with built-in bass unit. Keep us all up to date with your external crossovers etc, love it..!! I bought some very nice acoustic cloth in a light grey. With the help of my very patient wife, we proceeded to measure up, cut, sow on a machine and trim new "socks".
These are designed to slide over the top and pull down, covering both slides. Ensuring a tight fit was imperative but in the end it worked out superbly! I was also able to secure new Maggie badges - they sent me a pair free of charge direct from Minnesota! Shout out to your wife, stitching on those covers looks very professional.

I have uploaded a series of photos the process which was as follows: Stripping off the covers Stripping out the panels from their wooden surrounds, which involved carefully removing all the staples holding the panels into place Lining the channels into which the panels rest on the wooden surround with sound deadening foam sheets cut into strips Fasting down the panels with strips of metal brass door thresholds, cut to size Sandwiching more acoustic foam onto the back of the panels, between strips of pine wood Building a new crossover using ClarityCap CSA for the HF and ESA Clarities for the HF Bypassing the fuses Building a set of custom stands for them.
Anyone who knows about Maggies knows how inadequate the stands are - they move back and forward, and need straining I did the final mods the caps today, and I now have them running continuously in my dedicated listening room. Psilonaught Posted April 14, Posted April 14, I thought I'd share my final chapter of the magnepan restoration.

The final part was the build and install of the external cross overs with nice quality caps. Excellent job, they look superb. Picked up a pair of Magnepan 1.6qr speakers Saturday...for FREE
It's great with acoustic and classical material. Although limited in loudness and deep bass, its sound quality has fabulous neutrality, even tonality, low coloration and magnificent freedom from boxiness. The Minnesota-based US Magnepan Corporation has been making its various Magneplanar speakers for more than 40 years, though the range has rarely found its way to the UK during that time. The good news is that Hifi Sound of Stockton-on-Tees is taking on the agency.

Magnepan MG 1.6QR - $700
Practically a whole generation of audiophiles-m-m-m-my generation-cut their teeth on planar magnetic loudspeakers from the now venerable firm of Magnepan, Inc. In the mid-Seventies, a few hundred bucks got you a pair of Maggie Is or Ils that could make Lou Reed's walk on the wild side and those colored girls going "doot-dadoot-dadoot" , or George Szell and Rafael Druian's incomparable Mozart sonatas, or the Duke's men taking the A train come alive with a trippy presence and immediacy that no other loudspeaker of that day could quite equal. True, Maggies were large beasts, and more difficult to place than "box" speakers or so it seemed in those innocent, park-'emin-a-corner-and-forget-'em years. But who cared? Back then, all you had was a beat-up couch with a Madras throw, some slung-canvas chairs, a stack of brick 'n' board bookshelves, album covers like a second rug on your floor, your stash, and your stereo. Somewhere out in the world, there were classes you were supposed to be showing up for, exams you were scheduled to take, futures yawning like wolf traps.
