Musical Paradise MP-301 MK3 Mini Tube Amplifier with Headphone Output Deluxe Version

Hey Jeff. Great and interesting review. I came upon it because I'm looking for an affordable tube amp. I read your review of the 2. How would you compare the Musical Paradise to that Qinpu? Well Carlos, The sound can be excellent with both amps if you roll out the stock tubes. For instance, in the Qinpu right now I am running a GE NOS tube from korea and it sounds much better than when I was running the Tesla's or another russian tube, I am running with a pair of Polks and the resolution from this little amp is pretty impressive.

The Qinpu has much less volume and perceived power than the MP, and that is nearly the only downside to the Qinpu. The sound is very good with the 2. I also found some big-bottle Sovtek KT88s that are kick-butt! Some of the fun of the Musical Paradise tube amp is being able to switch out tubes to change the sound somewhat. Tubes can be a bit expensive, but inexpensive tubes that will work with the MP amp can be had, and they do sound great. I have about a 5-year stockpile of tubes at this point.

Another point about tubes, you can find them on Ebay all day with prices ranging from very inexpensive to reasonable to quite expensive. Read up on tubes if you are not familiar with them to get some background and understanding would be my advice. Also, keep in mind that the Qinpu is a hybrid amp, so it only uses a pre-amp tube and not a power tube.

The theory is if you send the signal to any amp "tubified" it will sound better, which it does in my opinion. The compounding factor of having the preamp and power amp tubes in the same amplifier, as with the Musical Paradise, does have a sweet effect on the sound. I have been running the MP with my Paradigm mini monitors, my PSB's and my boston acoustics, and love the sound all around. Plus the glow of tubes for coolness factor is just there!

I replaced the Qinpu with the MP in my main system and I love the decision! Also, the musical paradise site has an upgrade from the Mk 3 for sale now. My advise would be to grab it, if you are uncertain about tubes, buy the upgrade tubes and a spare set. In most instances two sets of tubes will last you a year or two with a few hours a day of use, give or take.

Grab some spare preamp tubes too. So make sure you have at least one spare set of preamp tubes and one spare set of power tubes. If you listen to headphones or plan to through the MP, read the information on tubes, certain tubes will hum more noticibly when using headphones.

One more very positive thing about the MP, it auto-biases the tubes when it powers up, so there is no fiddling with anything to get arguably the best performance from this amp. Some would think that is a detraction as I have heard of people who run the bias a bit higher or lower to change the sound.

I did not care too much about that and like the fact that I do not have to fiddle with this amp when I roll tubes, which is at this point, nearly weekly. I hope this answers your questions. Jeff The Qinpu is now in my office system and the MP has taken over as my primary amp for listening. Hello Jeff. Thanks for the response and advice. It seems the MP might be the better choice then.

I'm currently, but slowly building my dedicated and affordable music system. Though I have pre selected the components of my dream one. I would love to try several speakers, like the Pioneer sp bs22 and 52, some Audioengine for the desktop and Q Acoustics for the living room. It may be a while doing this but I just want to have fun in the process. Just like tube rolling it is for you on those valve amps. Having fun and loving the music is where it's at!

Keep at it, someday you will have your dream system. Take care! Hi Jeff, Thanks heaps for this informative post. I am thinking of getting the MK3 Deluxe.

What have you found so far with the preamp tubes? Have there been any standout improvements with different preamp tube types? I'm thinking of going KT77s in the power stage down the track. I found that certain preamp tubes buzz with the amp. I had a matched quad, and tried various combinations to see if I had a bad tube, nope - it always buzzed when they were in there.

I have not found significant differences between the tube types yet, but I have mostly rolled the power tubes. Hey Dynaway, I have not tried those yet. I have a set of the psvane s but have not broken the seal on them yet. Just bought the Goldlion KT66 over the weekend I just acquired a new tube amp. It sounds great, you may be surprised like I was how great 6. If you have read any of my posts, I love variety. This amp is right up my alley!

This amp takes tubes. Two different sets, one set is for power and the other is the pre-amplification tubes. Both type of tubes can make a difference in how the music sounds.

The maker of this amp has made it quite flexible with both sets of tubes. Lots of variety! This little amp takes four tubes, like I said a pair of power tubes and a set of preamp tubes. So far I have indulged myself and purchased a few sets of tubes. I have his this amp less than two weeks and I am on my third trade of tubes. I am trying to eliminate the tubes that suck from my growing stockpile of tubes.

I have purchased a set of RCA preamp tubes from the early s. As much as I would love to use a glass-tube in this application, the RCA 6SK7 tube is rated very high and quite inexpensive! However they are metal tubes and black and not as cool looking as a glass tube with the heater showing. They were matched! I was very hopeful, and when they arrived I changed out the stock Chinese tubes that came with the amp. I am listening right now to those RCA metal tubes. The system sounds very good! So far I have about 40 hours of running time on this amp and from what I hear it will sound even better going forward.

Moving around the tubes has been enjoyable as I get to sit and do some intense listening to see what I feel about the sound of each set of tubes that I install. I was pretty surprised at the price and that shipping was not jacked up to make up for the low price. Nope, shipping was reasonable, day return policy too. How could I go wrong with a deal like that? They sound mighty respectable with no burn-in time. I am hoping to find them a good enough sounding tube that I will get another matched quad of these tubes for day to day driving.

Special days I will do some tube swapping. I checked for background noise and these tubes had not raised the noise floor. I can hear the amp when nothing is running with a very faint hiss. I am working on eliminating this. I had a big problem with hum when I first got this amp and set it up.

I was able to get it under control using a method a friend advise I try. I do not recommend this at home unless you or someone you know is knowledgeable about such things. I removed the grounding pin from the computer cord that I use to connect this to power and added a three-plug to two-plug adapter.

I started with it in the normal configuration and I still heard the hum, but when I powered it down and turned the plug over and essentially plugged it in upside down the hum was totally gone, replaced with a very faint hiss type sound. This I can live with until I can reduce it further, but now is the area with diminishing returns occur. The effort to eliminate that little bit of hiss will cost quite a bit of time, and I have actually made it worse messing with things in the past.

Well, I wanted a variety and I wanted to tinker, woohoo! I will post a review at some point in the future. Keep on Listening!

Jeff Here is a link to what I now own and am loving so far! I am running some EL34s in it right now and listening to it in the background.

Excellent build quality, I have had it for a couple years now and have had zero issues with it. I think that I like the power and sound of the KT88 tubes in it.

LOG IN. OK guys and girl, I am not nearly the audiophile many of you are but here's my 2 cents on this 6. The stock tubes remain in their boxes replaced by rca js7's, how they use a black metal can is beyond my pay grade, and 2 E. Harmonix 6L6 for outputs. The amp is dead silent even with my open baffle 12" audio nirvana drivers, not an easy task when you consider the noise comes from the front and back.
