I believe there are a couple of AK members that own these amps. Which ones would sound best in it and what are your personal experiences with the tube upgrade? Thanks Bob. Cool stuff! The EV Jr. IMO, you seem to get a little more headroom before breakup, than with a 12AX7 tube. I should have included the details on my original post. I'm using this for a practice amp and it blast's my ears as is. Besides that my great room has a 12' ceiling and a lot of hard surfaces. Based on that what would you recommend to smooth out this little beast? As already Steve mentioned, a 12AY7 will go a long way in taming it down. Messages: I might use it someday but for now I'm digging the higher gain tubes.

Wow, huge difference - the tone immediately became sharp with nice microphonics overdrive. It took me a while to find the right EL I didn't like the original Sovtek. I had a few old RCAs around but didn't like them either.

Volume will turn down slowly from 10, and most of the tone control action will be as it turns right down. Expensive caps in an electric guitar tone circuit or the treble bleed in a volume circuit are, to put it bluntly, snake oil.
