Bowers and Wilkins DM602
David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can. Discussion in ' Speakers ' started by GreatTone , May 21, Log in or Sign up. Yes, a little bit of audio karma.
I have enjoyed them ever since, but I've felt like these speakers are the weak link in my system, and instead of replacing them, which I can't really afford at the moment, I've wondered how I can make them better.
I understand the crossover is the place to look. Would it be as simple as replacing the stock electrolytics with polyprop or something similar? Anyone ever worked on improving these speakers? GreatTone , May 21, Messages: 7, Location: Central CA. I have the Series 2 and my brother has the Series 2. I don't listen to mine critically for music; rather, I use them in a 5.
I believe the fault lies in the program or decoding, not the speakers, though, since other programs are perfectly clear. I have found that removing the grill covers seems to improve their clarity, and someone here recently posted something to the effect that the owner's manual recommends removing the grill covers for better sound.
I suspect that the capacitors are film caps, not electrolytics. I have never opened mine up, but if you do, I would love to see photos of the backs of the mid-bass drivers, and especially of the crossovers. Last edited: May 21, Zonker92 , May 21, Messages: 28 Location: SW Missouri.
Those probably have electrolytics, so replace those atleast on the tweeters with polypropylene caps and also replace the resistors on the tweeter section with Mills resistors available from Partsexpress. Line the cab walls with damping sheet material will also help. You might look at adding horiontal brace to stiffen the side walls.
I would also swap out the wire with some better wire Good luck. Double , May 22, The reason I asked is I had some dim memory of what Zonker92 mentioned: that simply changing out the electrolytics for film does more harm than good due to the change of response -- that is, the speakers were designed around the response of cheap electrolytics.
So maybe it's better to just put some new electrolytics in there? The originals are over 10 years old now, so they may be getting a little dry. GreatTone , May 22, Bracing those tiny cabinets, and adding more fill, seems like overkill to me. You'd lose some volume, the box is already pretty beefy, and I have to figure the engineers used the amount of fill that worked best for the speakers.
But that's just my guess. Zonker92 , May 22, Messages: 5, Location: Deeee-Troit I just saw a site that had official schematics for virtually all their speakers. I just can't remember where.
However, in cases like this, Google may be your friend. I have the S3, and I love 'em. I agree with Zonker, though, removing the grilles definitely clears things up the grilles, at least on mine, add way too much stuff between the sound and your ears. Messages: Thanks for the replies. I always remove the grilles when listening, so at least I've been doing that right. I don't really listen to much else besides vinyl. The amp may be a little bit low power-wise for these speakers, but my listening room is small, and volume is not an issue.
I'll do some more reading and see if I should just leave them be and enjoy them as is. So, no issues of degradation a la electrolytics drying out, and if I were inclined to try a better polyprop cap, there shouldn't be any issues, right? I don't know though, now that I know they're not electrolytics, I'm less concerned about changing them. Also, just to confirm: the DM S2 does have the Nautilus tweeter, and has 90dB sensitivity, which is more than I thought.
You could switch to different film caps and it should work, but the voicing may change slightly. Thanks for that link. I see that the caps are mylar polyester. One thing you could do, would be to bypass each of the two caps with one Audiocap Theta.
That would upgrade the caps without having to replace the stockers. I have read that the folks at JBL always liked to bypass polyester caps with polypropylenes, and really liked the resulting warm sound. Last edited: May 23, Cool, thanks. Sounds like a good option. GreatTone , May 23, Could be nice, and it's easily reversible.
If you did it, I'd be curious to see photos and hear what you think of the difference, if any. I bet it would be very subtle. Zonker92 , May 23, I mk1.
They are original the inspection sticker is on one if them. I am not sure what they are and don't know how to test. It was mentioned they are not Elytics.

Includes the original user manual, adjustable floor spikes and foam port bung. In my opinion the polypropylene cones of this series produce a more open and natural sound than the later Kevlar models. I have upgraded the capacitors in the crossover from electrolytic to polypr. Feel free to call or text me on - I kept getting spam calls so I have disabled the mobile button on gumtree. Please just hear a pair of these speakers, they give anything of. Collection can be made from Blackh. A pair of vintage DM7 speakers. Both tweeters are in need of repair. Suitable for spares or Repair.

B&W DM 602 Bookshelf Speakers
LOG IN. Category: Speakers The S3 monitors will blow you away. After a few hours of use, it is almost as if you are sitting in the middle of an orchestra. These speakers are some of the clearest for the price range, and I challenge anyone to find mids and highs that sound this clean. My musical taste mostly includes classical music, but I am also a huge movie buff. The setup itself was incredibly easy, because the sound disperses very evenly over a wide listening area, making placement less critical.
